This enclosure holds 1.10 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Image Dynamics IDMAX12 V4 runs a system Qtc of 1.14–1.31 with half power at 32.4–35.4 Hz, and the cone reaches its 19.0 mm travel limit at 805 W, above the driver’s 500 W thermal rating, so heat stops you before travel does. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 831 W — +25 W, or 3 percent more power for the same 19.0 mm of travel.

The box lifts resonance from 26.0 Hz free-air to 45–47 Hz and half power lands at 32.4–35.4 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. This system is offered in both coil variants, so both are plotted. They do not load the same box the same way.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 19.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 19.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 805 W, reached first at 38 Hz. It sits above the 500 W the driver can take thermally, so the voice coil gives up before the suspension does. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 831 W before hitting the same 19.0 mm. That is 3 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

Check your depth. The IDMAX12 needs roughly 8.25 inches of mounting depth, which rules out most behind seat and under seat locations before you start. This is a trunk or cargo area driver. If the space is depth limited you want a shallow mount 12 such as the Wavtech thinPRO 12 instead, and you should decide that before ordering rather than after.

Give it real power. Image Dynamics recommend 200 to 1000 watts and the driver comes alive in the upper half of that range. A small amplifier driven into clipping will sound worse and be harder on the voice coil than a larger amplifier running comfortably. This is one of the few drivers where the usual advice about not overpowering matters less than the advice about not underpowering.

The field replaceable cone assembly is worth knowing about before you ever need it. Sixteen screws and alignment shims, no glue and no press. A damaged cone means a rebuild rather than a replacement driver, which is unusual at any price and is a large part of why the IDMAX holds its value.

What comes in this system?

A Proline X sealed enclosure at 1.1 cubic feet net, with the Image Dynamics IDMAX12 V4 already mounted, gasketed and sealed against the baffle. Prewired with 12 gauge OFC to a recessed Proline X terminal cup, polyfill installed. An amplifier, power wire and RCA cables are not included.

How much amplifier power does the IDMAX12 need?

Target 600 to 1000 watts RMS at your final impedance. Image Dynamics recommend 200 to 1000 watts and rate the driver conservatively. Underpowering is the more common mistake here than overpowering. A small amplifier driven into clipping sounds worse and is harder on the voice coil than a larger amplifier running comfortably below its limit.

How does a 1000 watt driver work in a 1.1 cubic foot box?

Because in a sealed cabinet the air spring restricts cone travel, so the driver reaches its thermal limit before it reaches mechanical Xmax at rated power. The enclosure is doing the limiting rather than the motor. High power handling and moderate sealed volume are not in tension the way people assume, and you can see it for yourself by running the numbers through our Xmax calculator.

IDMAX10 or IDMAX12?

Same motor, same Xmax, same power rating. The difference is cone area: 547 square centimetres on the 12 against 394 on the 10, which is nearly 40 percent more air moved at the same excursion. If you have the space, the 12 is the more capable driver. The 10 exists for builds where the 12 will not physically fit or where the smaller cabinet matters more than the extra output.

Sealed or ported for an IDMAX?

Sealed is what the IDMAX was designed around. The whole point of the driver is high output that stays composed, and a sealed box is what keeps it composed. Ported will give you more output near the tuning frequency if raw SPL is the goal, and the IDMAX performs well ported, but you trade away the control that is the reason to choose this driver over a dedicated SPL sub.
