This enclosure holds 0.553 cu ft net per chamber. In it the JL Audio 10W3v3-4 runs a system Qtc of 0.85–0.87 with half power at 47.4–49.0 Hz, and the cone reaches its 14.0 mm travel limit at 454 W, below the driver’s 500 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 485 W — +31 W, or 7 percent more power for the same 14.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 60.2–61.9
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 -2 61.9 -4 60.2
-2 · EBP 61.9-4 · EBP 60.2
At 60.2–61.9 the 10W3v3-4 sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

02What the box does to it

0.553 cu ft against a 32.2 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 2.05  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 55–58 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.85–0.87
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
-2 · Qtc 0.87, Fc 58 Hz, F3 49.0 Hz-4 · Qtc 0.85, Fc 55 Hz, F3 47.4 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 31.5–33.0 Hz free-air to 55–58 Hz and half power lands at 47.4–49.0 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 14.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 454–475 W unfiltered  →  485–497 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 12 16 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 14.0 mm 454 W reaches Xmax here
-2 · 475 W, no filter-4 · 454 W, no filter-2 · 497 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct-4 · 485 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 14.0 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 14.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 454 W, reached first at 30 Hz. It sits under the 500 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 485 W before hitting the same 14.0 mm. That is 7 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

From the shop floor

Installer's take

1000 watts RMS combined and 107 square inches of cone in a cabinet 12 inches deep. Two W3v3 10s, two separate chambers, 0.553 net each. This is the dual for under a rear bench; with 15 inches of depth, the standard 30 by 15 is the better shape.

Height here was solved to the airspace. With the footprint fixed at 41 by 12, 7.5 inches puts each chamber at 0.553 net, the same 0.55 the standard dual gives each driver. The motors clear the top panel by 0.82 inches against our 0.75 minimum, so there is breathing room behind a 500 watt motor without chasing it.

The tradeoff worth being straight about: at that volume each 10W3v3-4 lands at Qtc 0.848, Fc 55.1 Hz, F3 47.4 Hz; the 10W3v3-2 has its own parameters and lands at Qtc 0.865, Fc 57.6 Hz, F3 49.0 Hz. That is above the 0.707 maximally flat reference, so there is some lift near the corner. The dual is the output product, not the flattest alignment in the W3v3 lineup.

Separate chambers as always. Two drivers sharing one volume interact acoustically, each one's compression stroke becoming the pressure environment the other works against. A full-height bonded divider stops it, and across 41 inches it ties the walls together too.

Wiring is simple on this one. Both drivers are single 4 ohm voice coils, so the pair presents 2 ohms through the shared cup. JL recommends 150 to 500 watts each; run the top of that range.

Questions

Why is this dual cabinet 41 inches wide instead of 30?

Because it is only 12 inches deep. Our standard Performance Optimized Down Fire cabinet for this driver is 30 wide by 15 deep, and this one is built for spaces three inches shallower than that, typically under the rear seat of a truck or SUV or on a narrow cargo floor.

Airspace has to come from somewhere. Losing depth means recovering it along the length, so the cabinet runs 41 inches long and stands 7.5 inches tall, and still keeps each driver in a properly sized separate chamber. If your space is wide and shallow rather than deep, this is the shape that works.

How does this compare to the standard 30 x 15 dual JL Audio 10W3v3 enclosure?

Same driver, different shape. The standard cabinet is 30 by 15 by 8 inches and holds 0.55 cubic feet net per driver. This cabinet is 41 by 12 by 7.5 inches and holds 0.553 cubic feet net per driver.

That is effectively the same airspace, so acoustically the two are interchangeable. Choose on the space: with 15 inches of depth the standard cabinet is the pick; if depth stops at 12 inches and you have 41 inches of run, this one fits.

What alignment does each chamber reach?

Each chamber holds 0.553 cubic feet net and each 10W3v3-4 lands at Qtc 0.848, Fc 55.1 Hz, F3 47.4 Hz. The 10W3v3-2 has its own published parameters and lands at Qtc 0.865, Fc 57.6 Hz, F3 49.0 Hz. That is above the 0.707 maximally flat reference, so there is some lift near the corner in exchange for twice the cone area and 1000 watts RMS combined.

Those figures are anechoic. Firing down into the floor, the sealed rolloff meets rising cabin gain below 60 Hz, so in-car response runs deeper.

How is this enclosure wired, and what impedance will my amplifier see?

The 10W3v3-4 is a single voice coil driver at 4 ohms nominal, so there is no coil configuration decision at the driver. The enclosure uses one side-mounted Proline X terminal cup, pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC to both driver positions in parallel, so two 4 ohm drivers present a 2 ohm load at the cup.

Confirm your amplifier is stable at 2 ohms before powering the system, and target 150 to 500 watts RMS per driver per JL Audio's recommendation.

How is the cabinet height determined on this build?

By the airspace. With the footprint fixed at 41 by 12, the height was solved to put each chamber on the 0.55 cubic feet the standard dual holds, then rounded up to the next sixteenth, which gives 7.5 inches.

At that height each 5.93 inch motor clears the top panel by 0.82 inches, above our 0.75 inch minimum. The chamber divider runs vertically, so splitting the cabinet into two chambers does not change the depth requirement.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted, and there is one cup serving both chambers rather than one per chamber. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since both baffles face the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF, with every joint machined to lock mechanically before adhesive goes on, which keeps both chambers airtight under sustained pressure cycling. The chamber divider is a full-height bonded 3/4 inch panel, which also ties the front and rear walls together across the 41 inch span.

Front baffles are a 1.5 inch double layer at both driver positions, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so each driver bolts to the inner layer. Corners are square, polyfill is installed as a light wall lining in each chamber, and the 1.75 inch standoffs ship uninstalled. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Are the JL Audio 10W3v3-4 subwoofers included with this enclosure?

No. This listing is for the enclosure only. Bring your own pair of JL Audio 10W3v3-4 subwoofers. The cutouts, mounting depth and motor clearance are cut specifically for this driver at both positions.
