This enclosure holds 0.502 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Hertz Mille PRO MPS 250 S4 runs a system Qtc of 0.68–0.76 with half power at 42.9–48.4 Hz, and the cone reaches its 16.8 mm travel limit at 702 W, above the driver’s 500 W thermal rating, so heat stops you before travel does. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 956 W — +254 W, or 36 percent more power for the same 16.8 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 55.8–62.2
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 S2 62.2 S4 55.8
S2 · EBP 62.2S4 · EBP 55.8
At 55.8–62.2 the Mille PRO MPS 250 S4 sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

02What the box does to it

0.502 cu ft against a 24.5 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 1.72  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 46 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.68–0.76
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
S2 · Qtc 0.68, Fc 46 Hz, F3 48.4 HzS4 · Qtc 0.76, Fc 46 Hz, F3 42.9 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 28.0–29.0 Hz free-air to 46 Hz and half power lands at 42.9–48.4 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 16.8 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 702–750 W unfiltered  →  956–984 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 12 16 20 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 16.8 mm 702 W reaches Xmax here
S2 · 702 W, no filterS4 · 750 W, no filterS2 · 984 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octS4 · 956 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 16.8 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 16.8 mm. Unfiltered that is 702 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits above the 500 W the driver can take thermally, so the voice coil gives up before the suspension does. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 956 W before hitting the same 16.8 mm. That is 36 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

Two MPS 250s, two separate chambers, 0.502 cubic feet net each, Hertz's own 14.2 liter recommendation per driver, in a cabinet 12 inches deep and 6.8125 tall.

Per chamber: MPS 250 S2: Qtc 0.677, Fc 46.2 Hz, F3 48.4 Hz. MPS 250 S4: Qtc 0.758, Fc 45.8 Hz, F3 42.9 Hz. Slightly less air per driver than our standard 30 x 15 dual at 0.547, so a touch tighter, same character.

16.8mm of Xmax per driver is the reason to build this. Two shallow 10s with nearly 17mm of one-way excursion apiece move a lot of air from a cabinet this low.

Coil note that trips people up: on the MPS 250 the S2 is the better damped driver. That reverses on the 12 inch MPS 300. Run two of the same model.

Displacement is Hertz's published 0.6 liters, 0.021 cubic feet per driver, and that is what our net figure uses.

Questions

Why is this cabinet 41 inches wide instead of 30?

Because it is only 12 inches deep. The standard Performance Optimized Down Fire platform is 30 wide by 15 deep, and this application needs a cabinet that fits a space three inches shallower than that.

The airspace has to come from somewhere, so the cabinet runs 41 inches long instead of 30 and stands 6.8125 inches tall, with each driver still in its own chamber. If you have 15 inches of depth, the standard cabinet is the pick; if your space is long and shallow, under a rear bench or on a narrow cargo floor, this is the shape that fits.

How does this compare to the standard 30 x 15 dual Hertz MPS 250 enclosure?

The standard cabinet is 30 x 15 x 7.6875 inches and gives each driver 0.547 cubic feet net. This cabinet is 41 x 12 x 6.8125 and gives each driver 0.502 cubic feet net, Hertz's 14.2 liters. The standard box runs slightly lower Qtc per chamber, 0.659 against 0.677 on the S2 and 0.739 against 0.758 on the S4; otherwise they behave alike. The choice is about shape: the standard box needs 15 inches of depth, this one needs 12 inches of depth and 41 inches of run.

What alignment does this cabinet give, and what is the low-frequency extension?

Each chamber holds Hertz's own sealed recommendation of 14.2 liters per driver. At 0.502 cubic feet net per chamber: MPS 250 S2: Qtc 0.677, Fc 46.2 Hz, F3 48.4 Hz. MPS 250 S4: Qtc 0.758, Fc 45.8 Hz, F3 42.9 Hz. The S2 is the tighter alignment and the S4 reaches lower.

Those are anechoic figures. Firing into the floor, the sealed rolloff meets rising cabin gain, so in-car response runs deeper than the numbers above.

How is this enclosure wired?

One side-mounted Proline X terminal cup with a single pair of posts, pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC to both driver positions in parallel. You do not wire the two chambers separately at the amplifier.

Both MPS 250 models are single voice coil, so there is no coil decision at the driver. Your load is set by the model, 2 ohms each for the S2 or 4 ohms each for the S4, and how the pair resolves through the cup. Confirm it against your amplifier's minimum stable load.

Should I use two S2 or two S4 drivers?

On this size the S2 is the better damped driver, Qts 0.41 against the S4's 0.48, and the S4 reaches lower with more motor force. Pick on the load your amplifier wants first, then on character. Whichever you choose, use two of the same model; this pattern reverses on the 12 inch MPS 300.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted, and there is one cup serving both chambers rather than one per chamber. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup, and on a down fire cabinet that keeps the connection accessible with the enclosure installed, since both baffles face the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and 12 gauge OFC pre-wired to both driver positions in parallel.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which keeps both chambers airtight under sustained pressure cycling. Corners are square, the Down Fire series standard, with no radii.

The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so each driver bolts to the inner layer. A full-height bonded 3/4 inch divider separates the chambers and ties the front and rear walls together across the 41 inch span. Polyfill is installed as a light wall lining. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Are the Hertz MPS 250 subwoofers included with this enclosure?

No. This listing is for the enclosure only. Bring your own pair of Hertz Mille Pro MPS 250 S2 or MPS 250 S4, two of the same model. The cutouts and mounting depth are direct fit at both positions.
