This enclosure holds 0.836 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Focal SUB 25 KXE runs a system Qtc of 0.71 with half power at 51.7 Hz, and the cone reaches its 22.5 mm travel limit at 933 W, above the driver’s 600 W thermal rating, so heat stops you before travel does. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 1178 W — +245 W, or 26 percent more power for the same 22.5 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 65.5
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 dual 4 ohm, coils in series 65.5
dual 4 ohm, coils in series · EBP 65.5
At 65.5 the SUB 25 KXE sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

02What the box does to it

0.836 cu ft against a 20.0 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 0.84  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 52 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.71
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
dual 4 ohm, coils in series · Qtc 0.71, Fc 52 Hz, F3 51.7 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 38.0 Hz free-air to 52 Hz and half power lands at 51.7 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. Figures are Focal’s own SUB 25 KXE technical sheet. Vas is the one soft number: Focal prints 20 liters and its own closed-box simulations use it, while the published moving mass and resonance imply nearer 16; at 16 liters every Qtc on this page would read a few hundredths lower.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 22.5 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 933 W unfiltered  →  1178 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 8 16 24 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 22.5 mm 933 W reaches Xmax here
dual 4 ohm, coils in series · 933 W, no filterdual 4 ohm, coils in series · 1178 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 22.5 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 22.5 mm. Unfiltered that is 933 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits above the 600 W the driver can take thermally, so the voice coil gives up before the suspension does. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 1178 W before hitting the same 22.5 mm. That is 26 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

Measure the installed height, not the cabinet height. The box is 10.5 tall on its own and the standoffs add 1.75, so plan around 12.25 inches of stack on a 41 by 12 footprint.

Airspace set the height: 0.836 cubic feet per chamber, Qtc 0.706, Fc 51.6 Hz, F3 51.7 Hz. The motors clear the lid with 2.98 to spare.

Floor slot is 1.01 times the cone area at the 1.75 standoff, which is the minimum. Do not set this on a lower standoff.

Cutout is 9.30, not the 235 mm Loudspeaker Database lists: Focal's drawing puts the basket at 235.2 mm. The 268 mm frame covers 9.30 fine and sits on the 12 inch baffle.

Inserts ship in the kit, not pressed: Focal prints no bolt circle. Mark from the driver, drill, press.

Questions

Why is this cabinet 41 inches wide instead of 30?

Because it is only 12 inches deep. The standard Performance Optimized Down Fire platform is 30 wide by 15 deep, and this application needs a cabinet that fits a space three inches shallower than that.

The airspace has to come from somewhere, so the cabinet runs 41 inches long instead of 30 and stands 10.5 inches tall, with each driver still in its own chamber. If you have 15 inches of depth, the standard cabinet is the pick; if your space is long and shallow, under a rear bench or on a narrow cargo floor, this is the shape that fits.

How does this compare to the standard 30 x 15 dual Focal SUB 25 KXE enclosure?

The standard cabinet is 30 x 15 x 11.23 inches and gives each driver 0.83 cubic feet net. This cabinet is 41 x 12 x 10.5 and gives each driver 0.836 cubic feet net, within 0.006 cubic feet of the standard box. Acoustically they are effectively the same enclosure. The choice is about shape: the standard box needs 15 inches of depth, this one needs 12 inches of depth and 41 inches of run.

What alignment does this cabinet give, and what is the low-frequency extension?

It is the Butterworth volume on Focal's published Fs 38 Hz, Qts 0.52 and Vas 20 liters. At 0.836 cubic feet net per chamber: Qtc 0.706 with Fc at 51.6 Hz and a predicted F3 of 51.7 Hz. If Focal's Vas is really nearer 16 liters, as its moving mass implies, Qtc reads a few hundredths lower.

Those are anechoic figures. Firing into the floor, the sealed rolloff meets rising cabin gain, so in-car response runs deeper than the numbers above.

What amplifier power should I run, and how should I wire it?

Focal rates the SUB 25 KXE at 600 watts RMS per driver and 1200 watts maximum, so target 420 to 600 watts RMS per driver at the final load.

Each driver has two 4 ohm coils. Wire both drivers identically: each driver in series with the pair in parallel gives 4 ohms, the safe load on any amplifier; all four coils in parallel is 1 ohm and needs an amplifier rated for it; all in series is 16 ohms. Confirm your amplifier's minimum stable impedance first.

How tall is this once the standoffs are on?

The cabinet is 10.5 inches tall in the down fire position, excluding the standoffs. The standoffs hold 1.75 inches under the baffle, so plan around a finished stack of 12.25 inches on a 41 by 12 inch footprint.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted, and there is one cup serving both chambers rather than one per chamber. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup, and on a down fire cabinet that keeps the connection accessible with the enclosure installed, since both baffles face the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and 12 gauge OFC pre-wired to both driver positions in parallel.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which keeps both chambers airtight under sustained pressure cycling. Corners are square, the Down Fire series standard, with no radii.

The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so each driver bolts to the inner layer. A full-height bonded 3/4 inch divider separates the chambers and ties the front and rear walls together across the 41 inch span. The baffle ships undrilled with a threaded insert kit because Focal prints no bolt circle. Polyfill is installed as a light wall lining. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Is the driver included, and are the threaded inserts installed?

No driver. This is an enclosure only: the cabinet in plush black carpet, one side-mounted pre-wired terminal cup to both positions, the polyfill lining in place, the standoffs, and a threaded insert kit with stainless machine screws.

The inserts ship loose on purpose: Focal prints no bolt circle for the SUB 25 KXE, so you set the driver in the recess, mark its holes, drill and press the inserts. The pair of SUB 25 KXE is purchased separately.
