This enclosure holds 0.560 cu ft net . In it the JL Audio 10TW3-D4 runs a system Qtc of 0.93 with half power at 39.5 Hz, and the cone reaches its 15.2 mm travel limit at 619 W, above the driver’s 400 W thermal rating, so heat stops you before travel does. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 665 W — +47 W, or 8 percent more power for the same 15.2 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 48.9
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 D4 48.9
D4 · EBP 48.9
EBP under 50 means a motor that wants a sealed load. The 10TW3-D4 sits at 48.9, inside that band, which is why this is a sealed build rather than a ported one.

02What the box does to it

0.560 cu ft against a 19.8 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 1.25  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 48 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.93
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
D4 · Qtc 0.93, Fc 48 Hz, F3 39.5 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 32.3 Hz free-air to 48 Hz and half power lands at 39.5 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 15.2 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 619 W unfiltered  →  665 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 12 16 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 15.2 mm 619 W reaches Xmax here
D4 · 619 W, no filterD4 · 665 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 15.2 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 15.2 mm. Unfiltered that is 619 W, reached first at 31 Hz. It sits above the 400 W the driver can take thermally, so the voice coil gives up before the suspension does. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 665 W before hitting the same 15.2 mm. That is 8 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

This box exists for one reason: the space under a rear bench is 12 inches deep and a 15 inch cabinet does not go in it. The TW3 already mounts in 3.25 inches, so the only thing to solve was depth.

Height here is set by the driver. 3.25 inches of mounting depth, minus the 0.75 recovered by the flush-recess outer baffle layer, puts the motor 1.75 inches into the cabinet, and we hold 0.75 above it. That makes the cabinet 4.75 inches tall, and on 41 by 12 that happens to hold 0.560 net, within a hundredth of the 0.551 in the standard 30 by 15. Same air, different shape.

That lands at Qtc 0.930, Fc 48.4 Hz, F3 39.5 Hz. Textbook maximally flat is 0.707, so this sits above it: a little lift ahead of the corner, which reads as weight and punch, then a clean 12 dB per octave rolloff. That is how JL voices the TW3 for small sealed boxes, near their 0.50 optimum.

The TW3 is the driver that made shallow subwoofers respectable. 15.2mm of one-way excursion in a 3.25 inch mounting depth, where most shallow 10s run 8 to 13mm. At 82.1 dB sensitivity it is not efficient, so give it the full 400 watts rather than half.

Dual 4 ohm coils, 2 ohms parallel or 8 ohms series at the driver. The standoffs add 1.75, so plan around 6.5 inches of stack.

Questions

Why is this cabinet 41 inches wide instead of 30?

Because it is only 12 inches deep. Our standard Performance Optimized Down Fire cabinet for this driver is 30 wide by 15 deep, and this one is built for spaces three inches shallower than that, typically under the rear seat of a truck or SUV or on a narrow cargo floor.

Airspace has to come from somewhere. Losing depth means recovering it along the length, so the cabinet runs 41 inches long and stands 4.75 inches tall, and the driver still gets a properly sized chamber. If your space is wide and shallow rather than deep, this is the shape that works.

How does this compare to the standard 30 x 15 JL Audio 10TW3 enclosure?

Same driver, different shape. The standard cabinet is 30 by 15 by 4.9375 inches and holds 0.551 cubic feet net. This cabinet is 41 by 12 by 4.75 inches and holds 0.560 cubic feet net.

That is effectively the same airspace, so acoustically the two are interchangeable. Choose on the space: with 15 inches of depth the standard cabinet is the pick; if depth stops at 12 inches and you have 41 inches of run, this one fits.

What makes the TW3 different from other shallow-mount subwoofers?

Excursion. The 10TW3-D4 delivers 15.2mm of one-way linear excursion in a 3.25 inch mounting depth, where most shallow 10 inch subwoofers run between 8 and 13mm, and excursion is what actually produces output at low frequencies.

JL Audio achieved it through their patented Thin-Line woofer technology, which reworks the motor and suspension geometry so the cone can travel farther in a shorter frame. The cast alloy chassis and tab-ear mounting design are part of the same package.

What does a Qtc of 0.930 mean in practice?

It means this enclosure sits above the textbook maximally flat alignment of 0.707. In practice that is a modest rise just ahead of the corner frequency, which adds perceived weight and punch, then a clean 12 dB per octave rolloff below F3 39.5 Hz.

Cabin gain lifts the low end further in a vehicle. It is what the TW3 does near the 0.50 optimum JL recommends, and this cabinet holds 0.560 cubic feet net.

How much power should I run to this subwoofer?

JL Audio rates the 10TW3-D4 at 400 watts RMS and recommends 200 to 400 watts of amplifier power. Aim for the upper end of that range rather than the lower.

Sensitivity is 82.1 dB at 1 watt, which is on the low side. That is the tradeoff for getting 15.2mm of excursion into a 3.25 inch frame, so underpowering it leaves real output on the table.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF, with every joint machined to lock mechanically before adhesive goes on, which keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. A windowed U-brace ties the front and rear walls together across the 41 inch span.

The front baffle is a 1.5 inch double layer, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. Corners are square, polyfill is installed as a light wall lining, and the 1.75 inch standoffs ship uninstalled. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Is the JL Audio 10TW3-D4 subwoofer included with this enclosure?

No. This listing is for the enclosure only. Bring your own JL Audio 10TW3-D4. The cutout and mounting depth are direct fit.
