This enclosure holds 1.201 cu ft net . In it the NVX VCW10v3 runs a system Qtc of 0.68–0.73 with half power at 34.5–42.5 Hz, and the cone reaches its 22.0 mm travel limit at 649 W, below the driver’s 1000 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 1056 W — +406 W, or 63 percent more power for the same 22.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 43.3–45.6
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 dual 2 ohm 43.3 dual 4 ohm 45.6
dual 2 ohm · EBP 43.3dual 4 ohm · EBP 45.6
EBP under 50 means a motor that wants a sealed load. The VCW10v3 sits at 43.3–45.6, inside that band, which is why this is a sealed build rather than a ported one.

02What the box does to it

1.201 cu ft against a 24.5 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 0.72  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 36–41 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.68–0.73
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
dual 2 ohm · Qtc 0.73, Fc 36 Hz, F3 34.5 Hzdual 4 ohm · Qtc 0.68, Fc 41 Hz, F3 42.5 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 27.3–32.4 Hz free-air to 36–41 Hz and half power lands at 34.5–42.5 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. Figures are NVX’s published VCW10v3 parameters from its owner’s manual and product pages, displacement included (0.150 cubic feet). One cabinet serves both coils; both are plotted.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 22.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 649–947 W unfiltered  →  1056–1452 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 8 16 24 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 22.0 mm 649 W reaches Xmax here
dual 2 ohm · 649 W, no filterdual 4 ohm · 947 W, no filterdual 2 ohm · 1056 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octdual 4 ohm · 1452 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 22.0 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 22.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 649 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits under the 1000 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 1056 W before hitting the same 22.0 mm. That is 63 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

This one is for the space under a rear bench, 12 inches deep, where the 30 by 15 does not go. Measure the installed height too: the box is 8.0625 tall and the standoffs add 1.75, so plan around 9.8125 inches of stack.

Airspace set the height, 1.201 cubic feet, the same air the standard box holds in a different shape. The motor clears the lid with 1.01 to spare.

D2 reads Qtc 0.734, Fc 35.8 Hz, F3 34.5 Hz. D4 reads Qtc 0.680, Fc 40.8 Hz, F3 42.5 Hz. NVX's own pages are the only published source for this driver, so treat the Qtc as good to a few hundredths.

Floor slot is 0.93 times the cone area at the 1.75 standoff, under the 1.0 I like, and 22 mm of excursion moves real air. Taller feet fix it if the floor allows.

Cut is 9.65, NVX's own figure, and the inserts are already pressed on their 10.24 bolt circle. It is sealed, so leave the polyfill as it is and run it at 1000 watts or under.

Questions

Why is this cabinet 41 inches wide instead of 30?

Because it is only 12 inches deep. Our standard Performance Optimized Down Fire cabinet for this driver is 30 wide by 15 deep, and this one is built for spaces three inches shallower than that, typically under the rear seat of a truck or SUV or on a narrow cargo floor.

Airspace has to come from somewhere. Losing depth means recovering it along the length, so the cabinet runs 41 inches long and stands 8.0625 inches tall, and the driver still gets a properly sized chamber. If your space is wide and shallow rather than deep, this is the shape that works.

How does this compare to the standard 30 x 15 NVX VCW10v3 enclosure?

Same driver, different shape. The standard cabinet is 30 by 15 by 8.58 inches and holds 1.20 cubic feet net. This cabinet is 41 by 12 by 8.0625 inches and holds 1.201 cubic feet net.

That is effectively the same airspace, so acoustically the two are interchangeable. Choose on the space: with 15 inches of depth the standard cabinet is the pick; if depth stops at 12 inches and you have 41 inches of run, this one fits.

Does this fit the NVX VCW10v3, and will any other 10 inch fit?

The VCW10v3, yes, in either coil (VCW102v3 or VCW104v3). The baffle is cut to 9.65 in, NVX's published cutout, under the 11.06 in frame, and the 6.30 inch motor clears the top panel with 1.01 inch to spare.

Any other 10, no. The airspace is worked out from the VCW10v3's own Qts and Vas, and a different woofer that happened to drop into the hole would not see the alignment printed on this page.

Why 1.201 cubic feet, and what alignment does it give?

It is the same airspace as the standard VCW10v3 cabinet, rebuilt on a 41 by 12 footprint, and one cabinet serves both coils. The VCW102v3 (D2) reads Qtc 0.734, Fc 35.8 Hz, F3 34.5 Hz, and the VCW104v3 (D4) reads Qtc 0.680, Fc 40.8 Hz, F3 42.5 Hz.

NVX's manual and product pages are the only published source for this driver, so treat the Qtc as good to a few hundredths. Those figures are anechoic; cabin gain adds real output below 50 Hz in a vehicle.

What amplifier power should I run, and how should I wire it?

NVX rates the VCW10v3 at 1000 watts RMS, so target 700 to 1000 watts RMS at the final load. The VCW102v3 (D2) wires to 4 ohms with its coils in series or 1 ohm in parallel, and the VCW104v3 (D4) wires to 8 ohms in series or 2 ohms in parallel.

Anything under 1 ohm, and many amplifiers at 1 ohm, is outside what the amplifier is built for; series wiring is the safe default. Confirm your amplifier's minimum stable impedance first.

How tall is this once the standoffs are on?

The cabinet is 8.0625 inches tall measured in the down fire position, and that figure excludes the standoffs. The standoffs hold 1.75 inches under the baffle, so plan your space around a finished stack of 9.8125 inches.

The footprint is 41 inches wide by 12 deep, sized for under a rear seat or a narrow cargo floor. If you have 15 inches of depth, the standard 30 by 15 cabinet is the better shape.

Do I need to add polyfill or damping?

No. Polyfill is already installed as a light wall lining to control internal reflections, and the quantity is chosen so it does not change the acoustic volume. Do not add more. Packing a sealed box with fill makes it behave as though it were larger, which walks the alignment away from the 1.201 cubic feet this cabinet was built to.

Is the driver included, and are the threaded inserts installed?

No driver. This is an enclosure only: you receive the cabinet finished in plush black carpet, one side-mounted pre-wired terminal cup, the polyfill lining already in place, the standoffs, and threaded inserts pressed on NVX's published 10.24 inch bolt circle with stainless machine screws.

The NVX VCW10v3 is purchased separately, and the cabinet is cut direct fit to it, not a general purpose 10 inch box.
