This enclosure holds 1.156 cu ft net per chamber. In it the JL Audio 10W3v3-4 runs a system Qtc of 0.68–0.70 with half power at 46.0–47.1 Hz, and the cone reaches its 14.0 mm travel limit at 226 W, below the driver’s 500 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 320 W — +95 W, or 42 percent more power for the same 14.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 60.2–61.9
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 -2 61.9 -4 60.2
-2 · EBP 61.9-4 · EBP 60.2
At 60.2–61.9 the 10W3v3-4 sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

02What the box does to it

1.156 cu ft against a 32.2 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 0.98  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 44–46 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.68–0.70
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
-2 · Qtc 0.70, Fc 46 Hz, F3 47.1 Hz-4 · Qtc 0.68, Fc 44 Hz, F3 46.0 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 31.5–33.0 Hz free-air to 44–46 Hz and half power lands at 46.0–47.1 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 14.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 226–235 W unfiltered  →  320–323 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 12 16 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 14.0 mm 226 W reaches Xmax here
-2 · 235 W, no filter-4 · 226 W, no filter-2 · 320 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct-4 · 323 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 14.0 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 14.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 226 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits under the 500 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 320 W before hitting the same 14.0 mm. That is 42 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

This box exists for the space under a rear bench, 12 inches deep, where the 30 by 15 does not go. The W3v3 is a deep driver, so on this cabinet the motor sets the height, not the air.

5.93 inches of driver, minus the 0.75 recovered by the flush-recess outer baffle layer, puts the motor 4.43 inches into the cabinet. Hold 0.75 inch above it and the cabinet is 7.4375 inches tall. On 41 by 12 that holds 1.156 net, more than the 1.09 the standard 30 by 15 was built to, and far more than JL's 0.625 recommendation. You cannot build 0.625 around this driver.

And the extra air helps. At 1.156 net a 10W3v3-4 lands at Qtc 0.683, Fc 44.4 Hz, F3 46.0 Hz, and a 10W3v3-2, which has its own parameters, at Qtc 0.697, Fc 46.4 Hz, F3 47.1 Hz. Both sit just under the 0.707 maximally flat reference. Flat response to the corner, tight transients, low group delay. Sealed Qtc always drops as the box grows, which is why forced oversizing is the safe direction.

On the driver itself, the W3v3 is JL's workhorse. Dynamic Motor Analysis for linearity, Elevated Frame Cooling routing air through slots above the top plate straight to the coil, mineral-filled polypropylene cone. 500 watts RMS and 14mm of Xmax.

Single voice coil at 4 ohms, so there is no wiring decision. JL recommends 150 to 500 watts; run the top of that range. The standoffs add 1.75, so plan around 9.1875 inches of stack.

Questions

Why is this cabinet 41 inches wide instead of 30?

Because it is only 12 inches deep. Our standard Performance Optimized Down Fire cabinet for this driver is 30 wide by 15 deep, and this one is built for spaces three inches shallower than that, typically under the rear seat of a truck or SUV or on a narrow cargo floor.

Airspace has to come from somewhere. Losing depth means recovering it along the length, so the cabinet runs 41 inches long and stands 7.4375 inches tall, and the driver still gets a properly sized chamber. If your space is wide and shallow rather than deep, this is the shape that works.

How does this compare to the standard 30 x 15 JL Audio 10W3v3 enclosure?

Same driver, different shape. The standard cabinet is 30 by 15 by 7.5625 inches and holds 1.09 cubic feet net. This cabinet is 41 by 12 by 7.4375 inches and holds 1.156 cubic feet net.

The wide cabinet holds more air because its height is set by the driver's mounting depth rather than by a volume target, and a larger sealed box runs a slightly lower Qtc, which is the safe direction. Choose on the space: with 15 inches of depth the standard cabinet is the pick; if depth stops at 12 inches and you have 41 inches of run, this one fits.

Why is this enclosure larger than JL Audio's recommended 0.625?

Because the driver's mounting depth sets the minimum cabinet height. The 10W3v3-4 mounts 5.93 inches deep; the flush-recess outer baffle layer recovers 0.75 inch, and with 0.75 inch held above the motor the cabinet stands 7.4375 inches tall.

On a 41 by 12 footprint that height holds 1.156 cubic feet net, so a 0.625 cubic foot box physically cannot contain this driver here. The result is better damped than the recommendation, which is the safe direction.

What does a Qtc of 0.683 mean in practice?

Qtc describes how a sealed system behaves near its corner frequency. The textbook reference is 0.707, called maximally flat, and at 0.683 with the 10W3v3-4 (0.697 with the 10W3v3-2) this enclosure sits just under it.

In practice you get flat response down to the corner, clean transient behavior with no overhang, low group delay, and a gentle 12 dB per octave rolloff below F3 46.0 Hz (47.1 Hz on the -2) that integrates naturally with the rising cabin gain of a vehicle.

How do I wire this enclosure?

Straightforward, because the 10W3v3-4 is a single voice coil driver at 4 ohms nominal, so there is no series or parallel decision to make. The enclosure has one side-mounted Proline X terminal cup pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC, and the amplifier sees 4 ohms.

JL Audio rates this driver at 500 watts RMS continuous and recommends 150 to 500 watts of amplifier power. Confirm your amplifier is comfortable at 4 ohms and set your gain toward the upper end of that range.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF, with every joint machined to lock mechanically before adhesive goes on, which keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. A windowed U-brace ties the front and rear walls together across the 41 inch span.

The front baffle is a 1.5 inch double layer, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. Corners are square, polyfill is installed as a light wall lining, and the 1.75 inch standoffs ship uninstalled. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Is the JL Audio 10W3v3-4 subwoofer included with this enclosure?

No. This listing is for the enclosure only. Bring your own JL Audio 10W3v3-4. The cutout, mounting depth and motor clearance are all cut specifically for this driver.
