This enclosure holds 0.572 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Hertz Mille PRO MPS 250 S4 runs a system Qtc of 0.65–0.73 with half power at 42.8–48.6 Hz, and the cone reaches its 16.8 mm travel limit at 623 W, above the driver’s 500 W thermal rating, so heat stops you before travel does. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 901 W — +278 W, or 45 percent more power for the same 16.8 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 55.8–62.2
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 S2 62.2 S4 55.8
S2 · EBP 62.2S4 · EBP 55.8
At 55.8–62.2 the Mille PRO MPS 250 S4 sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

02What the box does to it

0.572 cu ft against a 24.5 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 1.51  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 44 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.65–0.73
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
S2 · Qtc 0.65, Fc 44 Hz, F3 48.6 HzS4 · Qtc 0.73, Fc 44 Hz, F3 42.8 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 28.0–29.0 Hz free-air to 44 Hz and half power lands at 42.8–48.6 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 16.8 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 623–664 W unfiltered  →  901–930 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 12 16 20 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 16.8 mm 623 W reaches Xmax here
S2 · 623 W, no filterS4 · 664 W, no filterS2 · 930 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octS4 · 901 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 16.8 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 16.8 mm. Unfiltered that is 623 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits above the 500 W the driver can take thermally, so the voice coil gives up before the suspension does. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 901 W before hitting the same 16.8 mm. That is 45 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

From the shop floor

Installer's take

16.8mm of Xmax on a shallow 10, in a cabinet 4.8125 inches tall and 12 deep. Few shallow 10s come close to that travel.

Height is set by the 3.25 inch mounting depth with 0.81 inch above the motor. At that height the wide footprint holds 0.572 cubic feet net, against 0.549 in the standard box and Hertz's 14.2 liters.

Result: MPS 250 S2: Qtc 0.650, Fc 44.4 Hz, F3 48.6 Hz. MPS 250 S4: Qtc 0.729, Fc 44.1 Hz, F3 42.8 Hz. Clean, controlled alignments; this driver is not fighting you.

The coil choice is backwards from what you would guess: on the MPS 250 the S2 is the better damped driver. On the 12 inch MPS 300 that flips.

Single voice coil, so impedance is fixed by the model. Target 400 to 500 watts RMS. Displacement is Hertz's published 0.6 liters, 0.021 cubic feet.

Questions

Why is this cabinet 41 inches wide instead of 30?

Because it is only 12 inches deep. The standard Performance Optimized Down Fire platform is 30 wide by 15 deep, and this application needs a cabinet that fits a space three inches shallower than that.

The airspace has to come from somewhere, so the cabinet runs 41 inches long instead of 30 and stands 4.8125 inches tall. If you have 15 inches of depth, the standard cabinet is the pick; if your space is long and shallow, under a rear bench or on a narrow cargo floor, this is the shape that fits.

How does this compare to the standard 30 x 15 Hertz MPS 250 enclosure?

The standard cabinet is 30 x 15 x 4.9375 inches and holds 0.549 cubic feet net. This cabinet is 41 x 12 x 4.8125 and holds 0.572 cubic feet net, within 0.023 cubic feet of the standard box. Acoustically they are effectively the same enclosure. The choice is about shape: the standard box needs 15 inches of depth, this one needs 12 inches of depth and 41 inches of run.

What alignment does this cabinet give, and what is the low-frequency extension?

The 3.25 inch mounting depth sets the cabinet height, which lands the airspace a little above Hertz's 14.2 liter recommendation. At 0.572 cubic feet net: MPS 250 S2: Qtc 0.650, Fc 44.4 Hz, F3 48.6 Hz. MPS 250 S4: Qtc 0.729, Fc 44.1 Hz, F3 42.8 Hz. The S2 is the tighter alignment and the S4 reaches lower.

Those are anechoic figures. Firing into the floor, the sealed rolloff meets rising cabin gain, so in-car response runs deeper than the numbers above.

Should I choose the MPS 250 S2 or the MPS 250 S4?

On this size the S2 is the better damped driver, Qts 0.41 against the S4's 0.48, and the S4 reaches lower with more motor force, 17.3 T·m against 14.7. Both are single voice coil, so impedance is fixed by the model: 2 ohms for the S2, 4 ohms for the S4. Check your amplifier first, then decide on character; the pattern reverses on the 12 inch MPS 300.

Does it matter whether the coils are wired in series or parallel?

The MPS 250 is single voice coil, so there is no coil wiring decision. Your impedance is set by the model you buy. Hertz measures its dual coil models in parallel and notes that Fs, Vas and Qts are the same in series, with only Re, Le and BL changing.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup, and on a down fire cabinet that keeps the connection accessible with the enclosure installed, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. Corners are square, the Down Fire series standard, with no radii.

The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. A windowed U-brace ties the long panels together across the 41 inch span. Polyfill is installed as a light wall lining. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Is the Hertz MPS 250 subwoofer included with this enclosure?

No. This listing is for the enclosure only. Bring your own Hertz Mille Pro MPS 250 S2 or MPS 250 S4. The cutout and mounting depth are direct fit for either version.
