This enclosure holds 0.800 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Focal FLAX EVO P 25 FSE runs a system Qtc of 1.13 with half power at 32.6 Hz, and the cone reaches its 11.0 mm travel limit at 206 W, below the driver’s 280 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 219 W — +13 W, or 6 percent more power for the same 11.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 31.6
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 SVC 4 31.6
SVC 4 · EBP 31.6
EBP under 50 means a motor that wants a sealed load. The FLAX EVO P 25 FSE sits at 31.6, inside that band, which is why this is a sealed build rather than a ported one.

02What the box does to it

0.800 cu ft against a 25.0 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 1.10  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 44 Hz  ·  Qtc = 1.13
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
SVC 4 · Qtc 1.13, Fc 44 Hz, F3 32.6 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 30.0 Hz free-air to 44 Hz and half power lands at 32.6 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 11.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 206 W unfiltered  →  219 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 12 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 11.0 mm 206 W reaches Xmax here
SVC 4 · 206 W, no filterSVC 4 · 219 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 11.0 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 11.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 206 W, reached first at 34 Hz. It sits under the 280 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 219 W before hitting the same 11.0 mm. That is 6 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

From the shop floor

Installer's take

Same P 25 FSE airspace as our standard 30 by 15, laid out 41 long and 12 deep so it goes under a rear bench where 15 inches of depth is not available.

Focal builds this driver differently from everything else in the Down Fire program. The flax fiber cone has a useful stiffness-to-mass ratio with better internal damping than polypropylene. They also publish driver displacement, 0.07 cubic feet, which saves estimating it.

Now the honest read. Qts is 0.78, and Qtc cannot fall below Qts in any sealed box, so this driver is mildly underdamped no matter what you build. At 0.800 net it lands at Qtc 1.131, Fc 43.5 Hz, F3 32.6 Hz. Going bigger buys little and costs height, so this is where we stop.

Cutout is 9.25 inches, 235 mm. Focal's product page prints the 8 inch P 20 FSE's cutout by mistake; the P 25 basket is 233.8 mm. Mounting depth: Focal's tech sheet says 80.6 mm, 3.17 inches, a third-party measurement says 88. We designed to 88, 3.46 inches, because a box that clears the deeper figure clears both. The motor still has 1.79 inches above it.

There is a discrepancy in Focal's own documentation. Their application table claims deeper extension than their own T/S supports, and their own response graph sides with the T/S. We publish the computed figures. Single voice coil at 4 ohms, no wiring decision at the driver. Target 200 to 280 watts RMS.

Questions

Why is this cabinet 41 inches wide instead of 30?

Because it is only 12 inches deep. The standard Performance Optimized Down Fire cabinet for the Focal P 25 FSE is 30 wide by 15 deep, and this version is for spaces 3 inches shallower than that, under a rear bench or on a narrow cargo floor.

Airspace has to come from somewhere. Losing depth means recovering it along the length, so the cabinet runs 41 inches long and stands 6 inches tall. If you have 15 inches of depth, the standard cabinet is shorter in length and is the better pick; if you have 12 inches of depth and 41 inches of run, this is the shape that works.

How does this compare to the standard 30 x 15 Focal P 25 FSE enclosure?

Same driver, different shape. The standard cabinet is 30 by 15 by 6.125 inches and holds 0.754 cubic feet net. This cabinet is 41 by 12 by 6 inches and holds 0.800 cubic feet net.

The wide cabinet holds 0.046 cubic feet more, which puts it at Qtc 1.131 against the standard box's 1.149: slightly better damped, the same character. The choice is about the space you have: the standard box is deeper and shorter in length, this one is long and shallow.

Why does your F3 differ from the figure in Focal's technical sheet?

Because Focal's suggested application table does not reconcile with the Thiele-Small parameters printed on the same sheet. Running their published Qts of 0.78 and Vas of 25 liters through standard sealed box math gives considerably less extension than the table claims, at every volume it lists.

The deciding factor is Focal's own frequency response graph, also on that sheet, which rolls away below roughly 45 Hz. That measured curve agrees with the computed figures rather than the table. In this cabinet the computed result is Qtc 1.131, Fc 43.5 Hz, F3 32.6 Hz.

Why is the Qtc above 1.0? Is this enclosure the wrong size?

No. The P 25 FSE has a free-air Qts of 0.78, and system Qtc can never fall below the driver's Qts regardless of enclosure size, so no sealed box reaches a textbook 0.707 alignment with it. At 0.800 cubic feet net the system sits at Qtc 1.131, which produces a lift of about 2 dB near the corner frequency.

Building larger lowers Qtc only slowly, and the cabinet height it costs is not justified on a down fire enclosure designed to fit under a seat.

What is a flax cone and does it matter?

Flax is a natural fiber Focal uses in place of the polypropylene or treated paper common elsewhere in this category. The appeal is stiffness relative to mass and good internal damping, which helps a cone hold its shape under load without ringing.

On this driver it pairs with a rubber surround, a 38mm four-layer copper voice coil and a glass fiber former. Whether you can hear the cone material specifically is a fair question, but the engineering behind it is real rather than cosmetic.

How do I wire this enclosure?

Straightforward, because the P 25 FSE is a single voice coil driver at 4 ohms nominal. There is no series or parallel decision to make. The enclosure has one side-mounted Proline X terminal cup pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC, and the amplifier sees 4 ohms. Confirm your amplifier is comfortable at that load and set your gain for the 280 watt RMS rating.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

Is the Focal P 25 FSE subwoofer included with this enclosure?

No. This listing is for the enclosure only. Bring your own Focal Flax Evo P 25 FSE. The cutout and mounting depth are direct fit, and the feet ship uninstalled in the box.
