This enclosure holds 0.806 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Diamond Audio DMD104SH runs a system Qtc of 1.00 with half power at 49.6 Hz, and the cone reaches its 8.8 mm travel limit at 248 W, below the driver’s 250 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. A 25 Hz subsonic filter adds little here: 250 W against 248 W, 1 percent. The box already resonates at 63 Hz, so its own rolloff has removed most of what the filter would have stopped.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 57.7
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 D4 57.7
D4 · EBP 57.7
At 57.7 the DMD104SH sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

02What the box does to it

0.806 cu ft against a 15.8 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 0.69  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 63 Hz  ·  Qtc = 1.00
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
D4 · Qtc 1.00, Fc 63 Hz, F3 49.6 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 48.5 Hz free-air to 63 Hz and half power lands at 49.6 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 8.8 mm, and in this alignment a subsonic filter barely moves it.

PXmax = 248 W unfiltered  →  250 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 8.8 mm 248 W reaches Xmax here
D4 · 248 W, no filterD4 · 250 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 8.8 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 8.8 mm. Unfiltered that is 248 W, reached first at 45 Hz. It sits under the 250 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct, and they sit almost on top of the solid ones: 250 W against 248 W. At 63 Hz the filter sits well below resonance, where the sealed alignment has already rolled the cone off at 12 dB/oct, so there is little wasted travel left for it to recover. Set it anyway to keep road rumble out of the cone, but do not size the amplifier around it.

Installer's take

Same DMD-SH airspace as our standard 30 by 15, laid out 41 long and 12 deep for spaces that do not have 15 inches of depth.

The DMD-SH 10 is a clean 3.00 inch shallow with an aluminum heatsink dust cap, die-cast frame, and a vented pole. The two coils are genuinely different drivers here. The D2 runs Qts 0.66 with 13.7 T and 7.9mm of Xmax; the D4 runs Qts 0.77 with 16.4 T and 8.8mm.

In this cabinet the D2 lands at Qtc 0.854, Fc 62.1 Hz, F3 53.2 Hz and the D4 at Qtc 1.002, Fc 63.1 Hz, F3 49.6 Hz. So the D2 is the more damped of the two and the D4 has the stronger motor and more travel. If you want accuracy take the D2, if you want output take the D4.

If you compare our numbers to Diamond's manual they will not match, and the gap is bigger than a rounding difference. Run their own published Qts and Vas through standard sealed box math and every variant comes out 0.2 to 0.3 higher in Qtc than their enclosure table says. We publish what the driver data actually gives. Displacement is not published either; we used an estimated 0.05 cubic feet.

Honest limitation: Fs is 48 Hz, so F3 lands near 50 Hz no matter what you build. This is a punch and midbass driver for a tight space. 250 watts RMS, 500 max. Dual voice coil, final impedance set at the driver.

Questions

Why is this cabinet 41 inches wide instead of 30?

Because it is only 12 inches deep. The standard Performance Optimized Down Fire cabinet for the Diamond Audio DMD-SH is 30 wide by 15 deep, and this version is for spaces 3 inches shallower than that, under a rear bench or on a narrow cargo floor.

Airspace has to come from somewhere. Losing depth means recovering it along the length, so the cabinet runs 41 inches long and stands 5.9375 inches tall. If you have 15 inches of depth, the standard cabinet is shorter in length and is the better pick; if you have 12 inches of depth and 41 inches of run, this is the shape that works.

How does this compare to the standard 30 x 15 Diamond Audio DMD-SH enclosure?

Same driver, different shape. The standard cabinet is 30 by 15 by 6.125 inches and was built to 0.80 cubic feet net. This cabinet is 41 by 12 by 5.9375 inches and holds 0.806 cubic feet net.

The airspace is essentially the same, within about a hundredth of a cubic foot, so the two behave the same way. The choice is about the space you have: the standard box is deeper and shorter in length, this one is long and shallow.

Why don't your Qtc figures match the ones in Diamond's manual?

Because Diamond's enclosure table does not reconcile with the Thiele-Small parameters printed on the same page. Running their own published Qts and Vas through standard sealed box math gives Qtc values 0.2 to 0.3 higher than their table, for every variant.

That is not a gross versus net convention issue; no reasonable interpretation of the volume closes a gap that large. We publish figures computed directly from the driver parameters: in this cabinet the DMD102SH reads Qtc 0.854, Fc 62.1 Hz, F3 53.2 Hz and the DMD104SH reads Qtc 1.002, Fc 63.1 Hz, F3 49.6 Hz.

Should I choose the DMD102SH or the DMD104SH?

These two differ more than most dual-impedance pairs. The DMD102SH runs a Qts of 0.66 with 13.7 T of motor force and 7.9mm of Xmax, landing at Qtc 0.854, Fc 62.1 Hz, F3 53.2 Hz. The DMD104SH runs a Qts of 0.77 with 16.4 T and 8.8mm, landing at Qtc 1.002, Fc 63.1 Hz, F3 49.6 Hz.

The D4 has the stronger motor and more excursion; the D2 has noticeably better damping. Check what load your amplifier is stable into first. If either works, choose the D2 for accuracy and the D4 for output.

Why is the predicted F3 around 50 Hz?

Because the driver's free-air resonance is 48 Hz, which is high. A sealed enclosure raises the system corner frequency above the driver's Fs, so no sealed box puts this driver into the 30s. In this cabinet the D2 is 3 dB down at 53.2 Hz and the D4 at 49.6 Hz.

The DMD-SH is designed for punch and midbass authority from a 3 inch mounting depth rather than deep extension. In a vehicle, cabin gain rising below 50 Hz fills in well below the anechoic figure.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. A windowed U-brace, dadoed to the shell, ties the long walls together across the 41 inch span. The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets with the outer layer machined as a flush recess. Polyfill is installed as a light wall lining. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Is the Diamond Audio DMD-SH subwoofer included with this enclosure?

No. This listing is for the enclosure only. Bring your own Diamond Audio DMD102SH or DMD104SH. The cutout and mounting depth are direct fit for either version, and the feet ship uninstalled in the box.
