This enclosure holds 0.78 cu ft net . In it the JL Audio 10W1v3 runs a system Qtc of 0.75–0.77 with half power at 41.1–41.7 Hz, and the cone reaches its 11.4 mm travel limit at 164 W, below the driver’s 300 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 218 W — +54 W, or 33 percent more power for the same 11.4 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 54.5–55.1
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 10W1v3-2 54.5 10W1v3-4 55.1
10W1v3-2 · EBP 54.510W1v3-4 · EBP 55.1
At 54.5–55.1 the 10W1v3 sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

02What the box does to it

0.78 cu ft against a 44.1 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 1.99  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 44–45 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.75–0.77
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
10W1v3-2 · Qtc 0.75, Fc 44 Hz, F3 41.1 Hz10W1v3-4 · Qtc 0.77, Fc 45 Hz, F3 41.7 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 25.2–26.1 Hz free-air to 44–45 Hz and half power lands at 41.1–41.7 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. Parameters are JL Audio’s own owner’s manual for the 10W1v3, both columns: the 10W1v3-2 and 10W1v3-4 are single voice coil versions of one driver. JL publishes the driver displacement, 0.037 cu ft.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 11.4 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 164–172 W unfiltered  →  218–219 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 12 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 11.4 mm 164 W reaches Xmax here
10W1v3-2 · 164 W, no filter10W1v3-4 · 172 W, no filter10W1v3-2 · 218 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct10W1v3-4 · 219 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 11.4 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 11.4 mm. Unfiltered that is 164 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits under the 300 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 218 W before hitting the same 11.4 mm. That is 33 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

0.78 cubic feet: Qtc 0.754 on the 2 ohm version and Qtc 0.767 on the 4 ohm version, F3 41.1 Hz on the 2 ohm version and 41.7 Hz on the 4 ohm version.

Measure the installed height, not the cabinet height: 6.10 tall on its own, 7.85 with the standoffs on the 30 by 15 footprint.

Floor slot is 0.93 times the cone area at the 1.75 standoff, under the 1.0 I like. For hard use, taller feet or front firing.

JL's 10W1v3 table holds together across both columns, and JL publishes the displacement, so nothing here is estimated.

JL's 0.55 cannot be built on this footprint: the motor needs 6.10 inches of height, which holds 0.78. That is the better box anyway, Qtc 0.75 to 0.77.

Inserts are pressed on the 9.7 inch bolt circle. Sealed, so leave the polyfill as it is and run it at 300 watts or under per driver.

Questions

Does this fit the JL Audio 10W1v3, and will any other 10 inch fit?

The 10W1v3, yes, in both the 2 ohm and the 4 ohm version. The baffle is cut to 9.0625 in, JL's published mounting hole, under the 10.5 in frame. The 4.60 inch motor clears the cabinet with 0.75 inch to spare.

Any other 10, no. The airspace is engineered around the 10W1v3's own Qts and Vas, and a different woofer that happened to drop into the hole would not see the alignment printed on this page.

Why 0.78 cubic feet, and what alignment does it target?

0.78 cubic feet net on JL's published figures: the 2 ohm version reads Qtc 0.754 with resonance at 43.7 Hz and half power at 41.1 Hz, and the 4 ohm version reads Qtc 0.767 with resonance at 45.0 Hz and half power at 41.7 Hz. One cabinet serves both versions. The 4.60 inch motor sets this down fire's height, and at that height the cabinet holds 0.78 cubic feet, more than JL's 0.55 cubic foot recommendation; it is built at the size the motor allows, which lands both versions closer to maximally flat than JL's own box. That is a touch above maximally flat: a small lift near resonance and firm midbass.

The 4.60 inch mounting depth sets the minimum cabinet height here, so the airspace is what the motor allows rather than a free choice.

What amplifier power should I run, and how should I wire it?

JL rates the 10W1v3 at 300 watts RMS, so target 210 to 300 watts RMS at the final load.

JL sells the 10W1v3 as a single voice coil driver in a 2 ohm and a 4 ohm version: the 2 ohm version presents 2 ohms; the 4 ohm version presents 4 ohms, wired straight to the terminal cup. Confirm your amplifier's minimum stable impedance first.

How tall is this once the standoffs are on?

The cabinet is 6.10 inches tall measured in the down fire position, and that figure excludes the standoffs. The standoffs hold 1.75 inches under the baffle, so plan your space around a finished stack of roughly 7.85 inches.

The footprint is the standard Performance Optimized down fire platform, 30.00 inches wide by 15.00 deep. Height is the only dimension solved to the driver, and here it is the 10W1v3's 4.60 inch motor that sets it.

Why is the front baffle double-layered?

The baffle is two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, 1.5 inches through. A single 3/4 inch panel flexes under the pressure a 10 inch woofer puts on it at 300 watts, which smears output and works the driver loose over time; the second layer stiffens the face and gives the mounting hardware twice the material to bite.

The outer layer is machined as a flush recess to JL's 10.5 inch frame, so the driver bolts to the inner layer.

What is the expected low-frequency extension?

Anechoic F3 is 41.1 Hz on the 2 ohm version and 41.7 Hz on the 4 ohm version. Above Qtc 0.707 F3 sits below fc, so the response carries a small lift near resonance before it rolls off.

Those figures exclude cabin gain. In a car the cabin's transfer function adds real output below 50 Hz, so in-vehicle response runs deeper than the numbers above.

Do I need to add polyfill or damping?

No. Polyfill is already installed as a light wall lining to control internal reflections, and the quantity is chosen so it does not change the acoustic volume.

Do not add more. Packing a sealed box with fill makes it behave as though it were larger, which walks the alignment away from the 0.78 cubic feet this cabinet was built to.

Is the driver included, and are the threaded inserts installed?

No driver. This is an enclosure only. You receive the cabinet finished in plush black carpet, one side-mounted pre-wired terminal cup, the polyfill lining already in place, the standoffs, and stainless machine screws.

The threaded inserts are already pressed on JL's 9.7 inch bolt circle, so the 10W1v3 drops in and bolts down. The JL Audio 10W1v3 is purchased separately, and the cabinet is cut direct fit to it, not a general purpose 10 inch box.
