This enclosure holds 0.551 cu ft net . In it the JL Audio 10TW3-D4 runs a system Qtc of 0.93 with half power at 39.5 Hz, and the cone reaches its 15.2 mm travel limit at 626 W, above the driver’s 400 W thermal rating, so heat stops you before travel does. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 671 W — +45 W, or 7 percent more power for the same 15.2 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 48.9
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 D4 48.9
D4 · EBP 48.9
EBP under 50 means a motor that wants a sealed load. The 10TW3-D4 sits at 48.9, inside that band, which is why this is a sealed build rather than a ported one.

02What the box does to it

0.551 cu ft against a 19.8 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 1.27  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 49 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.93

D4 · Qtc 0.93, Fc 49 Hz, F3 39.5 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 32.3 Hz free-air to 49 Hz and half power lands at 39.5 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 15.2 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 626 W unfiltered  →  671 W with a 25 Hz subsonic

D4 · 626 W, no filterD4 · 671 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 15.2 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 15.2 mm. Unfiltered that is 626 W, reached first at 32 Hz. It sits above the 400 W the driver can take thermally, so the voice coil gives up before the suspension does. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 671 W before hitting the same 15.2 mm. That is 7 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

The TW3 is the driver that made shallow subwoofers respectable. Before JL's Thin-Line patents, shallow meant compromised, and everybody knew it. 15.2mm of one-way linear excursion in a 3.25 inch mounting depth is what changed that conversation.

Most shallow 10s in this program run 8 to 13mm. JL gets 15.2, and excursion is what produces output at low frequencies. Cone area alone does not do it.

At 0.551 net, just above JL's own 0.50 optimum, this lands at Qtc 0.934. Textbook maximally flat is 0.707, so this sits well above it: a little lift ahead of the corner, which reads as weight and punch, then a clean 12 dB per octave rolloff. That is how JL voices the TW3 for small sealed boxes. A flat 0.707 would take about 2.3 cubic feet, which is not a shallow enclosure.

JL publishes a sealed range up to 0.75, and we build near the 0.50 optimum rather than the top of the range. Going larger only pulls Qtc to about 0.86 and F3 down a hertz or so, and it costs cabinet height. On a down fire box where height is the whole point, that trade is not worth making.

One honest note: at 82.1 dB sensitivity this is not an efficient driver. That is the tradeoff for the excursion and the shallow depth. Give it the full 400 watts rather than half of it.

At 4.9375 inches this ties the Hertz MPS 250 and Morel PS104D cabinets as the shortest 10 inch builds we make, behind only the Alpine RS-W. Dual 4 ohm coils, 2 ohms parallel or 8 ohms series at the driver.

Questions

What makes the TW3 different from other shallow-mount subwoofers?

Excursion. The 10TW3-D4 delivers 15.2mm of one-way linear excursion in a 3.25 inch mounting depth. Most shallow 10 inch subwoofers in this category run between 8 and 13mm, and excursion is what actually produces output at low frequencies.

JL Audio achieved it through their patented Thin-Line woofer technology, which reworks the motor and suspension geometry so the cone can travel farther in a shorter frame. The cast alloy chassis and tab-ear mounting design are part of the same package. This driver is largely why the shallow-mount category is taken seriously today.

What does a Qtc of 0.934 mean in practice?

It means this enclosure sits above the textbook maximally flat alignment. Qtc 0.707 is the reference that box design theory identifies as producing the flattest anechoic response, and this enclosure lands at 0.934.

In practice that means a modest rise just ahead of the corner frequency, which adds perceived weight and punch, then a clean 12 dB per octave rolloff below it. Cabin gain lifts the low end further in a vehicle. It is what the TW3 does in the volume JL recommends; a flat 0.707 would need about 2.3 cubic feet.

Why build near 0.50 cubic feet when JL's range goes to 0.75?

Because 0.50 is JL Audio's stated optimum, not just the bottom of their range, and the alignment supports it. At 0.551 net the system lands at Qtc 0.934 with F3 at 39.5 Hz. Going to 0.75 only pulls Qtc to roughly 0.86 and F3 to about 38 Hz, little more than a hertz of extension.

On a down fire enclosure the extra volume also costs cabinet height, and height is the entire reason to choose a shallow driver. The optimum is genuinely optimal here.

How much power should I run to this subwoofer?

JL Audio rates the 10TW3-D4 at 400 watts RMS and recommends 200 to 400 watts of amplifier power. Aim for the upper end of that range rather than the lower.

Sensitivity is 82.1 dB at 1 watt, which is on the low side. That is the tradeoff for getting 15.2mm of excursion into a 3.25 inch frame: the motor prioritizes control and travel over efficiency. Underpowering it will leave real output on the table, so give it the full 400 watts if your electrical system supports it.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

Why are the corners square instead of radiused?

Down Fire cabinets are built with square corners as a series standard. The 3 inch top down corner radius used on other Proline X alignments does not apply here. A down fire box is a low, wide platform that sits flat against a floor or under a seat, and square corners maximize usable internal volume for a given footprint while keeping the cabinet stable on its mounting surface.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which is what keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling.

The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. On a cabinet under 5 inches tall the baffle carries a large share of the structural load. Perimeter cross-bracing and pre-installed polyfill complete the build. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Is the JL Audio 10TW3-D4 subwoofer included with this enclosure?

No. This listing is for the enclosure only. Bring your own JL Audio 10TW3-D4. The cutout and mounting depth are direct fit.
