This enclosure holds 1.39 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Arc Audio ARC 12 runs a system Qtc of 0.71–0.80 with half power at 35.6–38.8 Hz, and the cone reaches its 16.0 mm travel limit at 326 W, below the driver’s 350 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 457 W — +131 W, or 40 percent more power for the same 16.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 43.5–48.6
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 dual 2 ohm 48.6 dual 4 ohm 43.5
dual 2 ohm · EBP 48.6dual 4 ohm · EBP 43.5
EBP under 50 means a motor that wants a sealed load. The ARC 12 sits at 43.5–48.6, inside that band, which is why this is a sealed build rather than a ported one.

02What the box does to it

1.39 cu ft against a 74.4 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 1.89  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 39–40 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.71–0.80
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
dual 2 ohm · Qtc 0.71, Fc 39 Hz, F3 38.8 Hzdual 4 ohm · Qtc 0.80, Fc 40 Hz, F3 35.6 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 22.8–23.2 Hz free-air to 39–40 Hz and half power lands at 35.6–38.8 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. Figures are the published Arc Audio ARC 12 parameters (Arc Audio ARC Series owner's manual and product page). One cabinet serves both coils; both are plotted. Each chamber holds 1.39 cubic feet, so these figures are per driver.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 16.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 326–337 W unfiltered  →  457–506 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 12 16 20 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 16.0 mm 326 W reaches Xmax here

Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 16.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 326 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits under the 350 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 457 W before hitting the same 16.0 mm. That is 40 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

From the shop floor

Installer's take

1.39 cubic feet per chamber on the 41 by 16 face: Qtc 0.707 on the D2, 0.802 on the D4.

The D2 sits right on Butterworth here; the D4 runs a little fuller. Either is a good box, wire the pair identically.

Inserts ship in the kit, not pressed: no bolt circle is published. Mark from the driver, drill, press. It is sealed, so leave the polyfill as it is and run it at 350 watts per driver or under.

Questions

Does this fit the Arc Audio ARC 12 in both D2 and D4, and will any other 12 inch fit?

Yes, both coils: they share the 12.375 in frame, the 11 in cutout and the 6 in mounting depth, and the motor clears the cabinet with 2.82 in to spare. One cabinet serves both coils: the ARC 12 D2 reads Qtc 0.707 with half power at 38.8 Hz, and the D4 reads Qtc 0.802 at 35.6 Hz. Run two of the same coil so the chambers match.

Any other 12, no. The airspace is worked out from the ARC 12's own Qts and Vas, and a different woofer that happened to drop into the hole would not see the alignment printed on this page.

Why 1.39 cubic feet per chamber, and what alignment does it target?

1.39 cubic feet is the Butterworth volume for the ARC 12 D2. On the D2 figures (Fs 22.8 Hz, Qts 0.42, Vas 74.4 liters) that is Qtc 0.707 with half power at 38.8 Hz. At Qtc 0.71 the response is maximally flat into the rolloff, so F3 and fc coincide.

The face is fixed at 41 by 16 for the whole wide dual line, so depth is the only free dimension. One cabinet serves both coils: the ARC 12 D2 reads Qtc 0.707 with half power at 38.8 Hz, and the D4 reads Qtc 0.802 at 35.6 Hz.

What amplifier power should I run, and how should I wire it?

The ARC 12 is rated at 350 watts RMS per driver, so target 244 to 350 watts RMS per driver at the final load.

A pair of ARC 12 D2 drivers can land on 0.5 ohm with all four coils in parallel, 2 ohms as series pairs in parallel, or 8 ohms all in series. A pair of ARC 12 D4 drivers can land on 1 ohm with all four coils in parallel, 4 ohms as series pairs in parallel, or 16 ohms all in series. Anything under 1 ohm, and many amplifiers at 1 ohm, is outside what the amplifier is built for; series wiring is the safe default. Confirm your amplifier's minimum stable impedance first.

Why the wide format, and why the raked back?

41 inches across lets two 12 inch drivers sit side by side while the cabinet stays 15.14 inches deep at the base, so it spans a cargo floor instead of eating into it. The back panel rakes 20 degrees to sit flush against the rear seat.

The cargo area acts as an acoustic extension for the sealed box, and the cabin adds real output below 50 Hz, so in-vehicle response runs deeper than the anechoic 38.8 Hz on this page.

Why two separate chambers instead of one shared volume?

Two drivers sharing one sealed volume load each other: each driver's compression stroke becomes the pressure the other works against, which blurs the alignment either would have alone. A bonded full-height 3/4 inch divider gives each driver its own 1.39 cubic feet and its own polyfill.

It also means a failure in one driver does not unload the other, and the alignment on this page is the alignment in each chamber, not an average across a shared box.

What is the expected low-frequency extension?

Anechoic F3 is 38.8 Hz per chamber on the D2 and 35.6 Hz on the D4. At Qtc 0.71 the response is maximally flat into the rolloff, so F3 and fc coincide.

Those figures exclude cabin gain. In a vehicle the cabin's transfer function adds real output below 50 Hz, so in-vehicle response runs deeper than the numbers above.

Do I need to add polyfill or damping?

No. Polyfill is already installed in both chambers as a light wall lining to control internal reflections, and the quantity is chosen so it does not change the acoustic volume.

Do not add more. Packing a sealed box with fill makes it behave as though it were larger, which walks the alignment away from the 1.39 cubic feet per chamber this cabinet was built to.

Are the drivers included, and are the threaded inserts installed?

No drivers. This is an enclosure only. You receive the cabinet finished in plush black carpet with the gloss black acrylic baffle insert, one side-mounted pre-wired terminal cup to both positions, the polyfill lining already in place, and a threaded insert kit with stainless machine screws.

The inserts ship loose on purpose: Arc Audio prints no bolt circle for the ARC 12, so you set each driver in its recess, mark its holes, drill and press the inserts. The pair of Arc Audio ARC 12 is purchased separately.
