This enclosure holds 1.11 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Alpine R2-W12 runs a system Qtc of 0.60–0.73 with half power at 41.6–51.2 Hz, and the cone reaches its 20.0 mm travel limit at 813 W, above the driver’s 750 W thermal rating, so heat stops you before travel does. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 1224 W — +412 W, or 51 percent more power for the same 20.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 54.5–65.9
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 dual 2 ohm 65.9 dual 4 ohm 54.5
dual 2 ohm · EBP 65.9dual 4 ohm · EBP 54.5
At 54.5–65.9 the R2-W12 sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

02What the box does to it

1.11 cu ft against a 36.9 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 1.17  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 43 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.60–0.73
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
dual 2 ohm · Qtc 0.60, Fc 43 Hz, F3 51.2 Hzdual 4 ohm · Qtc 0.73, Fc 43 Hz, F3 41.6 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 29.0–30.0 Hz free-air to 43 Hz and half power lands at 41.6–51.2 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. Figures are the published Alpine R2-W12 parameters (Alpine tech sheet TS_R2-W12D2-D4). One cabinet serves both coils; both are plotted. Each chamber holds 1.11 cubic feet, so these figures are per driver.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 20.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 813–882 W unfiltered  →  1224–1319 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 8 16 24 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 20.0 mm 813 W reaches Xmax here
dual 2 ohm · 813 W, no filterdual 4 ohm · 882 W, no filterdual 2 ohm · 1319 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octdual 4 ohm · 1224 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 20.0 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 20.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 813 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits above the 750 W the driver can take thermally, so the voice coil gives up before the suspension does. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 1224 W before hitting the same 20.0 mm. That is 51 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

1.11 cubic feet per chamber on the 41 by 16 face: Qtc 0.604 on the D2, 0.729 on the D4.

At 41 wide the shallowest depth the 6.5 inch motor allows already gives more air than the D2 wants, so it lands dry and tight. The D4 is the closer match to flat in this cabinet.

Inserts ship in the kit, not pressed: no bolt circle is published. Mark from the driver, drill, press. It is sealed, so leave the polyfill as it is and run it at 750 watts per driver or under.

Questions

Does this fit the Alpine R2-W12 in both D2 and D4, and will any other 12 inch fit?

Yes, both coils: they share the 12.6 in frame, the 10.88 in cutout and the 6.5 in mounting depth, and the motor clears the cabinet with 0.75 in to spare. One cabinet serves both coils: the R2-W12 D2 reads Qtc 0.604 with half power at 51.2 Hz, and the D4 reads Qtc 0.729 at 41.6 Hz. Run two of the same coil so the chambers match.

Any other 12, no. The airspace is worked out from the R2-W12's own Qts and Vas, and a different woofer that happened to drop into the hole would not see the alignment printed on this page.

Why 1.11 cubic feet per chamber, and what alignment does it target?

1.11 cubic feet is what the 41 by 16 face gives each driver at the shallowest depth the 6.5 inch motor allows, more air than the D2 needs for 0.707, so it lands on the dry side. On the D2 figures (Fs 29.0 Hz, Qts 0.41, Vas 36.9 liters) that is Qtc 0.604 with half power at 51.2 Hz. Below Qtc 0.707 the rolloff starts early and gently and F3 sits above fc: a dry, tightly damped box.

The face is fixed at 41 by 16 for the whole wide dual line, so depth is the only free dimension. One cabinet serves both coils: the R2-W12 D2 reads Qtc 0.604 with half power at 51.2 Hz, and the D4 reads Qtc 0.729 at 41.6 Hz.

What amplifier power should I run, and how should I wire it?

The R2-W12 is rated at 750 watts RMS per driver, so target 525 to 750 watts RMS per driver at the final load.

A pair of R2-W12 D2 drivers can land on 0.5 ohm with all four coils in parallel, 2 ohms as series pairs in parallel, or 8 ohms all in series. A pair of R2-W12 D4 drivers can land on 1 ohm with all four coils in parallel, 4 ohms as series pairs in parallel, or 16 ohms all in series. Anything under 1 ohm, and many amplifiers at 1 ohm, is outside what the amplifier is built for; series wiring is the safe default. Confirm your amplifier's minimum stable impedance first.

Why the wide format, and why the raked back?

41 inches across lets two 12 inch drivers sit side by side while the cabinet stays 13.57 inches deep at the base, so it spans a cargo floor instead of eating into it. The back panel rakes 20 degrees to sit flush against the rear seat.

The cargo area acts as an acoustic extension for the sealed box, and the cabin adds real output below 50 Hz, so in-vehicle response runs deeper than the anechoic 51.2 Hz on this page.

Why two separate chambers instead of one shared volume?

Two drivers sharing one sealed volume load each other: each driver's compression stroke becomes the pressure the other works against, which blurs the alignment either would have alone. A bonded full-height 3/4 inch divider gives each driver its own 1.11 cubic feet and its own polyfill.

It also means a failure in one driver does not unload the other, and the alignment on this page is the alignment in each chamber, not an average across a shared box.

What is the expected low-frequency extension?

Anechoic F3 is 51.2 Hz per chamber on the D2 and 41.6 Hz on the D4. Below Qtc 0.707 the rolloff starts early and gently and F3 sits above fc: a dry, tightly damped box.

Those figures exclude cabin gain. In a vehicle the cabin's transfer function adds real output below 50 Hz, so in-vehicle response runs deeper than the numbers above.

Do I need to add polyfill or damping?

No. Polyfill is already installed in both chambers as a light wall lining to control internal reflections, and the quantity is chosen so it does not change the acoustic volume.

Do not add more. Packing a sealed box with fill makes it behave as though it were larger, which walks the alignment away from the 1.11 cubic feet per chamber this cabinet was built to.

Are the drivers included, and are the threaded inserts installed?

No drivers. This is an enclosure only. You receive the cabinet finished in plush black carpet with the gloss black acrylic baffle insert, one side-mounted pre-wired terminal cup to both positions, the polyfill lining already in place, and a threaded insert kit with stainless machine screws.

The inserts ship loose on purpose: Alpine prints no bolt circle for the R2-W12, so you set each driver in its recess, mark its holes, drill and press the inserts. The pair of Alpine R2-W12 is purchased separately.
