This enclosure holds 1.25 cu ft net . In it the American Bass Hawk Slim 12 runs a system Qtc of 1.00 with half power at 41.2 Hz, and the cone reaches its 8.5 mm travel limit at 215 W, below the driver’s 900 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. A 25 Hz subsonic filter adds little here: 222 W against 215 W, 3 percent. The box already resonates at 52 Hz, so its own rolloff has removed most of what the filter would have stopped.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 45.5
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 dual 4 ohm 45.5
dual 4 ohm · EBP 45.5
EBP under 50 means a motor that wants a sealed load. The Hawk Slim 12 sits at 45.5, inside that band, which is why this is a sealed build rather than a ported one.

02What the box does to it

1.25 cu ft against a 33.9 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 0.96  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 52 Hz  ·  Qtc = 1.00
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
dual 4 ohm · Qtc 1.00, Fc 52 Hz, F3 41.2 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 37.5 Hz free-air to 52 Hz and half power lands at 41.2 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. Figures are American Bass’s published HAWKSLIM-1244 (dual 4 ohm) parameters. Driver displacement is not published; 0.056 cubic feet is an estimate. Qts 0.713 is above 0.707, so this alignment sits above flat by design.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 8.5 mm, and in this alignment a subsonic filter barely moves it.

PXmax = 215 W unfiltered  →  222 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 8.5 mm 215 W reaches Xmax here
dual 4 ohm · 215 W, no filterdual 4 ohm · 222 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 8.5 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 8.5 mm. Unfiltered that is 215 W, reached first at 37 Hz. It sits under the 900 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct, and they sit almost on top of the solid ones: 222 W against 215 W. At 52 Hz the filter sits well below resonance, where the sealed alignment has already rolled the cone off at 12 dB/oct, so there is little wasted travel left for it to recover. Set it anyway to keep road rumble out of the cone, but do not size the amplifier around it.

Installer's take

1.25 cubic feet, Qtc 1.00. The Hawk Slim 12's Qts is already over 0.707, so flat was never on the table; this is the realistic trunk-size box and it lands full and punchy.

American Bass's own box is 1.45. Ours is a touch smaller and a touch punchier. The 3.54 inch motor is so shallow that depth never mattered; width hit the 29.5 cap and the volume set the rest.

Cut is 10.9, the recess is 12.7. Inserts ship in the kit, not pressed: no bolt circle is published. It is sealed, so leave the polyfill as it is.

Power is the catch. 900 watts is the coil's thermal rating, but with 8.5 mm of Xmax the cone runs out of travel at about 210 watts in this box, and a bigger sealed box only makes that worse. Put about 210 watts on it. If the customer wants the full 900, a ported box is the better match.

Questions

Does this fit the American Bass Hawk Slim 12, and will any other 12 inch fit?

The HAWKSLIM-1244, yes: the baffle is cut to its 10.9 in cutout, the recess to its 12.7 in overall diameter, and its 3.54 in motor clears the cabinet with 2.28 in to spare. This box is for the HAWKSLIM-1244, the dual 4 ohm Hawk Slim 12. American Bass lists different mounting figures for the dual 2 ohm HAWKSLIM-1222 and publishes no parameters for it, so it is not covered by this alignment.

Any other 12, no. The airspace is worked out from the Hawk Slim 12's own Qts and Vas, and a different woofer that happened to drop into the hole would not see the alignment printed on this page.

Why 1.25 cubic feet, and why is the Qtc above 0.707?

The Hawk Slim 12 has a Qts of 0.713, already above the 0.707 of a maximally flat alignment, so no sealed box of any size makes it flat: a sealed box only raises Qtc above the driver's own Qts. Getting it down to 0.8 would take 4.6 cubic feet, far beyond a trunk wedge. This cabinet is built to 1.25 cubic feet net, which puts it at Qtc 1.00: full and punchy, with a lift near 52 Hz before the rolloff. American Bass's own sealed box for the HAWKSLIM-1244 is 1.453 cubic feet net, which reads Qtc 0.96; ours is a slightly smaller box with a little more punch.

Treat the figures as good to a few hundredths: the displacement is our estimate, since American Bass publishes none.

What amplifier power should I run, and how should I wire it?

American Bass rates the Hawk Slim 12 at 900 watts RMS, but that is a thermal rating. Its published one-way Xmax is 8.5 mm, and in this sealed box the cone reaches it at about 210 watts, worst near 36 Hz. Plan on an amplifier of about 210 watts RMS for clean output; more power past that point adds distortion and stress, not low end. A larger sealed box does not help: in American Bass's own 1.453 cubic feet the cone reaches Xmax at about 190 watts. If you want to use the full 900 watts, a ported box is the better match for this driver.

The HAWKSLIM-1244 has two 4 ohm coils: 8 ohms in series or 2 ohms in parallel. Confirm your amplifier's minimum stable impedance first.

Why the wedge angle, and why rear-firing into the trunk?

The seat-side face carries a 20 degree rake that matches the lean of a factory rear seat back, so the cabinet sits flush against it and the cargo space in front stays usable. The baffle is the vertical trunk-lid-side face, so the driver fires rearward into the trunk cavity.

The trunk acts as an acoustic extension for the sealed box, and the cabin adds real output below 50 Hz, so in-vehicle response runs deeper than the anechoic 41.2 Hz on this page.

Why is the front baffle double-layered?

The baffle is two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, 1.5 inches through. A single 3/4 inch panel flexes under the pressure a 12 inch woofer puts on it at 900 watts, which smears output and works the driver loose over time; the second layer stiffens the face and gives the mounting hardware twice the material to bite.

The outer layer is machined as a flush recess, so the driver bolts to the inner layer and sits flush with the gloss black acrylic insert.

What is the expected low-frequency extension?

Anechoic F3 is 41.2 Hz, with system resonance at 52.4 Hz. Above Qtc 0.707 the response carries a lift near resonance, so F3 sits below fc and the box sounds fuller than a flat alignment.

Those figures exclude cabin gain. In a car the cabin's transfer function adds real output below 50 Hz, so in-vehicle response runs deeper than the numbers above.

Do I need to add polyfill or damping?

No. Polyfill is already installed as a light wall lining to control internal reflections, and the quantity is chosen so it does not change the acoustic volume.

Do not add more. Packing a sealed box with fill makes it behave as though it were larger, which walks the alignment away from the 1.25 cubic feet this cabinet was built to.

Is the driver included, and are the threaded inserts installed?

No driver. This is an enclosure only. You receive the cabinet finished in plush black carpet with the gloss black acrylic baffle insert, one side-mounted pre-wired terminal cup, the polyfill lining already in place, and a threaded insert kit with stainless machine screws.

The inserts ship loose on purpose: American Bass prints no bolt circle for the Hawk Slim 12, so you set the driver in the recess, mark its holes, drill and press the inserts. The driver is purchased separately.
