This enclosure holds 0.756 cu ft net per chamber. In it the ResoNix GUS-12 runs a system Qtc of 0.67–0.72 with half power at 36.7–36.8 Hz, and the cone reaches its 20.0 mm travel limit at 680 W, below the driver’s 800 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 1080 W — +400 W, or 59 percent more power for the same 20.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 50.0–51.9
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 D4 51.9 D2 50.0
D4 · EBP 51.9D2 · EBP 50.0
At 50.0–51.9 the GUS-12 sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

02What the box does to it

0.756 cu ft against a 119.3 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 5.58  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 35–37 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.67–0.72
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
D4 · Qtc 0.72, Fc 37 Hz, F3 36.7 HzD2 · Qtc 0.67, Fc 35 Hz, F3 36.8 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 14.5 Hz free-air to 35–37 Hz and half power lands at 36.7–36.8 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. This enclosure ships without a driver, so both coil variants the maker offers are plotted. They do not load the same box the same way.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 20.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 680–700 W unfiltered  →  1080–1257 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 8 16 24 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 20.0 mm 680 W reaches Xmax here
D4 · 680 W, no filterD2 · 700 W, no filterD4 · 1080 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octD2 · 1257 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 20.0 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 20.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 680 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits under the 800 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 1080 W before hitting the same 20.0 mm. That is 59 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

Same air as our standard dual GUS box, 0.756 per chamber against ResoNix's 0.75, in a cabinet that stands 8.125 inches instead of 9.875. That is the whole point of the wide format on this driver: the pair was tall, and now it is not.

The number that gets you to 36.7 Hz per driver is the GUS-12's 14.5 Hz free-air resonance. Pair it with a Qts of 0.28 and you can properly damp this driver in three quarters of a cubic foot.

Both coils land within a tenth of a hertz of each other, D4 at Qtc 0.718 and D2 at 0.670, so pick whichever suits your amplifier.

Standoffs are not optional: ResoNix wants 60mm from the baffle to the floor, so plan on about 10.5 inches installed. 1600 watts RMS combined; respect it and make sure your electrical system can deliver it cleanly.

Questions

Why is this dual cabinet 41 inches wide instead of 30?

Because some installs run out of height or depth before they run out of length. The standard ResoNix GUS-12 Down Fire cabinet is 30 by 15 by 9.875 inches; this one is 41 by 14 by 8.125. Spreading the airspace along 11 more inches lets the cabinet stand 1.75 inches lower, and at 14 inches deep it is 1 inch shallower front to back, about the minimum a 12 inch frame needs.

If you have 41 inches of run and height or depth is the limit, this is the shape. If length is the limit, the standard 30 x 15 is the better fit.

How does this compare to the standard 30 x 15 ResoNix GUS-12 enclosure?

Same driver, same construction, different shape. The standard box is 30 by 15 by 9.875 inches and holds 0.75 cubic feet net per chamber; this one is 41 by 14 by 8.125 inches and holds 0.756 cubic feet net per chamber.

The airspace is matched, so the alignment is effectively the same. The choice is about the shape of your space: the standard box when length is limited, this one when height or depth is the limit and you have 41 inches of run.

How does a 4.5 inch deep driver reach 36.7 Hz?

The free-air resonance. The GUS-12 measures 14.5 Hz, which is exceptionally low for any 12 inch subwoofer and remarkable for one with a 4.539 inch mounting depth. A sealed enclosure always raises the system corner above the driver's Fs, so a low starting point is what makes deep extension possible in a small box.

Combined with a Qts of 0.28, the driver has the motor control to reach a well damped alignment in three quarters of a cubic foot per chamber: Qtc 0.718 with F3 at 36.7 Hz on the D4, Qtc 0.670 with F3 at 36.8 Hz on the D2.

How is this enclosure wired, and how do I set my final impedance?

One side-mounted Proline X terminal cup with a single pair of posts, pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC to both driver positions in parallel. You do not wire the two chambers separately at the amplifier.

Each GUS-12 is dual voice coil: the D2 gives 1 ohm in parallel or 4 in series, the D4 gives 2 ohms parallel or 8 series. Two drivers in parallel through the cup halve that again, so a pair of D4 drivers wired parallel presents a 1 ohm load. Use two of the same coil, wire them identically, and confirm the load against your amplifier's minimum stable impedance.

Why does this enclosure come with standoffs?

Because ResoNix specifies a minimum clearance in front of the cone, and on a down fire enclosure the thing in front of the cone is the floor. Their requirement for the GUS-12 is 28mm between the surround and the obstruction, or 60mm measured from the baffle surface.

This cabinet ships with custom-fit standoffs machined to hold that clearance at both driver positions. Setting a down fire GUS enclosure flat on the floor would restrict the drivers and compromise output and mechanical safety. The standoffs are a required part of the design, not an accessory.

How much power should I run to these subwoofers?

800 watts RMS per driver, 1600 watts combined, and not more. ResoNix states the GUS series is not deliberately underrated, and that burnt voice coils or damage from bottoming out are not covered under warranty.

At 1600 watts plan on adequate alternator output, battery capacity, and correctly sized power and ground cable. ResoNix also notes these drivers stay composed right up to their limits, so it will not always be obvious when you are pushing too hard.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF, which keeps both chambers airtight under sustained pressure cycling. The chamber divider is a full-height bonded 3/4 inch panel that also ties the walls together across the 41 inch span. Corners are square.

Front baffles are double layer at 1.5 inches at both positions, outer layer machined as a flush recess, with 8/32 threaded inserts and stainless machine screws. Polyfill is installed as a light wall lining in each chamber, and custom-fit standoffs are included. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Are the ResoNix GUS-12 subwoofers included with this enclosure?

No. This listing is for the enclosure only, and includes the custom-fit standoffs. ResoNix GUS-12 subwoofers are purchased directly from ResoNix Sound Solutions. The cutouts and mounting depth are direct fit at both positions; use two of the same coil configuration.
