This enclosure holds 0.799 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Skar Audio EVL-12 runs a system Qtc of 0.57–0.62 with half power at 51.0–56.5 Hz, and the cone reaches its 23.5 mm travel limit at 2044 W, above the driver’s 1250 W thermal rating, so heat stops you before travel does. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 3308 W — +1264 W, or 62 percent more power for the same 23.5 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 58.2–63.1
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 D4 58.2 D2 63.1
D4 · EBP 58.2D2 · EBP 63.1
At 58.2–63.1 the EVL-12 sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

02What the box does to it

0.799 cu ft against a 18.2 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 0.80  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 44 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.57–0.62
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
D4 · Qtc 0.62, Fc 44 Hz, F3 51.0 HzD2 · Qtc 0.57, Fc 44 Hz, F3 56.5 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 32.2–32.6 Hz free-air to 44 Hz and half power lands at 51.0–56.5 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. Figures are Skar Audio’s published EVL-12 parameters from its product page. Driver displacement is not published; 0.129 cubic feet is an estimate. Worth knowing: the D4’s printed Qts of 0.46 sits 9 percent from the 0.50 its own Qes and Qms reproduce; the D2’s printed Qts of 0.42 sits 10 percent from the 0.46 its own Qes and Qms reproduce. One cabinet serves both coils; both are plotted. Each chamber holds 0.799 cubic feet, so these figures are per driver.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 23.5 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 2044–2110 W unfiltered  →  3308–3404 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 8 16 24 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 23.5 mm 2044 W reaches Xmax here
D4 · 2110 W, no filterD2 · 2044 W, no filterD4 · 3308 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octD2 · 3404 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 23.5 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 23.5 mm. Unfiltered that is 2044 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits above the 1250 W the driver can take thermally, so the voice coil gives up before the suspension does. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 3308 W before hitting the same 23.5 mm. That is 62 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

Measure the installed height, not the cabinet height. The box is 9.125 tall on its own and the standoffs add 1.75, so plan around 10.875 inches of stack on a 41 by 14 footprint.

The 7.61 inch motor sets the height of this box and of the standard dual, so the two stand the same. What the wide box buys is 1 inch less depth and more air: 0.799 per chamber against 0.59, which drops the D4 to Qtc 0.618 and the D2 to 0.570. That is a dry, controlled alignment. If you want punch, the standard box is livelier.

Floor slot is 0.84 times the cone area at the 1.75 standoff, under the 1.0 I like. Taller feet fix it if the floor allows.

Cut is 11.22, Skar's own figure. Inserts ship in the kit, not pressed: Skar prints no bolt circle. Mark from the driver, drill, press. It is sealed, so leave the polyfill as it is and run each driver at 1250 watts or under.

Questions

Why is this dual cabinet 41 inches wide instead of 30?

Because some installs run out of height or depth before they run out of length. The standard Skar EVL-12 Down Fire cabinet is 30 by 15 by 9.11 inches; this one is 41 by 14 by 9.125. Here the motor sets the height, so the wide box stands about the same, but it is 1 inch shallower front to back, about the minimum a 12 inch frame needs, and the extra length holds more air.

If you have 41 inches of run and height or depth is the limit, this is the shape. If length is the limit, the standard 30 x 15 is the better fit.

How does this compare to the standard 30 x 15 Skar EVL-12 enclosure?

Same driver, same construction, different shape. The standard box is 30 by 15 by 9.11 inches and holds 0.59 cubic feet net per chamber; this one is 41 by 14 by 9.125 inches and holds 0.799 cubic feet net per chamber.

The wide box holds more because the 7.61 inch motor sets its height, and on a longer footprint that height encloses more air. More air lowers Qtc, a softer, better damped corner. Choose the standard box when length is limited or you want the livelier alignment, this one when depth is the limit.

What amplifier power should I run, and how should I wire it?

Skar rates the EVL-12 at 1250 watts RMS per driver, so target 875 to 1250 watts RMS per driver at the final load.

A pair of EVL-12 D4 drivers can land on 1 ohm with all four coils in parallel, 4 ohms as series pairs in parallel, or 16 ohms all in series. A pair of EVL-12 D2 drivers can land on 0.5 ohm with all four coils in parallel, 2 ohms as series pairs in parallel, or 8 ohms all in series. Anything under 1 ohm, and many amplifiers at 1 ohm, is outside what the amplifier is built for; series wiring is the safe default. Confirm your amplifier's minimum stable impedance first.

How tall is this once the standoffs are on?

The cabinet is 9.125 inches tall measured in the down fire position, and that figure excludes the standoffs. The standoffs hold 1.75 inches under the baffle, so plan your space around a finished stack of roughly 10.875 inches.

The footprint is 41 inches wide by 14 deep, the Down Fire Wide platform. Height is the only dimension solved to the driver.

Why two separate chambers instead of one shared volume?

Two drivers sharing one sealed volume load each other: each driver's compression stroke becomes the pressure the other works against, which blurs the alignment either would have alone. A bonded full-height 3/4 inch divider gives each EVL-12 its own 0.799 cubic feet and its own polyfill.

It also means the alignment on this page is the alignment in each chamber, not an average across a shared box, and the divider ties the walls together across the 41 inch span.

What is the expected low-frequency extension?

Anechoic per chamber, EVL-12 D4: F3 51.0 Hz with system resonance at 43.8 Hz (Qtc 0.618); EVL-12 D2: F3 56.5 Hz with system resonance at 43.7 Hz (Qtc 0.570). Below Qtc 0.707 the rolloff is gentle and F3 sits above fc, which is what a well-damped sealed box does.

Those figures exclude cabin gain. In a car the cabin's transfer function adds real output below 50 Hz, so in-vehicle response runs deeper than the numbers above.

Do I need to add polyfill or damping?

No. Polyfill is already installed in both chambers as a light wall lining to control internal reflections, and the quantity is chosen so it does not change the acoustic volume.

Do not add more. Packing a sealed box with fill makes it behave as though it were larger, which walks the alignment away from the 0.799 cubic feet per chamber this cabinet was built to.

Is the driver included, and are the threaded inserts installed?

No driver. This is an enclosure only. You receive the cabinet finished in plush black carpet, one side-mounted terminal cup pre-wired to both positions, the polyfill lining already in place, the standoffs, and a threaded insert kit with stainless machine screws.

The inserts ship loose on purpose: Skar prints no bolt circle for the EVL-12, so you set each driver in its recess, mark its holes, drill and press the inserts. The pair of Skar EVL-12 is purchased separately.
