This enclosure holds 0.804 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Hertz Mille PRO MPS 300 S2 / S4 runs a system Qtc of 0.81–1.00 with half power at 37.0–39.4 Hz, and the cone reaches its 16.8 mm travel limit at 811 W, above the driver’s 500 W thermal rating, so heat stops you before travel does. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 892 W — +81 W, or 10 percent more power for the same 16.8 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 43.6–51.1
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 S2 43.6 S4 51.1
S2 · EBP 43.6S4 · EBP 51.1
The Mille PRO MPS 300 straddles the boundary at 43.6–51.1 depending on coil — part sealed-band, part transition. Either way it takes a sealed load happily; the coil you run shifts the alignment more than it shifts this verdict.

02What the box does to it

0.804 cu ft against a 64.9 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 2.85  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 44–47 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.81–1.00
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
S2 · Qtc 1.00, Fc 47 Hz, F3 37.0 HzS4 · Qtc 0.81, Fc 44 Hz, F3 39.4 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 23.0–24.0 Hz free-air to 44–47 Hz and half power lands at 37.0–39.4 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 16.8 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 811–840 W unfiltered  →  892–992 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 12 16 20 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 16.8 mm 811 W reaches Xmax here
S2 · 840 W, no filterS4 · 811 W, no filterS2 · 892 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octS4 · 992 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 16.8 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 16.8 mm. Unfiltered that is 811 W, reached first at 22 Hz. It sits above the 500 W the driver can take thermally, so the voice coil gives up before the suspension does. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 892 W before hitting the same 16.8 mm. That is 10 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

Two MPS 300s at 0.804 net each, 22.8 liters against Hertz's 22.7 per driver, in a cabinet 8.375 inches tall instead of 10.75. The standard dual was the tallest box in the Down Fire line; the wide one takes 2.375 inches off it on nearly the same air.

Per chamber: the S2 lands at Qtc 1.001 with F3 at 37.0 Hz, the S4 at Qtc 0.811 with F3 at 39.4 Hz. On the MPS 300 the S4 is the better damped driver. That is the reverse of the 10 inch MPS 250, so do not carry the assumption over.

Use two of the same model. Both are single voice coil, so the load is set by the model: a pair in parallel through the cup is 1 ohm on S2s, 2 ohms on S4s.

1000 watts RMS combined. Hertz suggests a 15 Hz subsonic at 24 dB per octave; use it.

Questions

Why is this dual cabinet 41 inches wide instead of 30?

Because some installs run out of height or depth before they run out of length. The standard Hertz Mille Pro MPS 300 Down Fire cabinet is 30 by 15 by 10.75 inches; this one is 41 by 14 by 8.375. Spreading the airspace along 11 more inches lets the cabinet stand 2.375 inches lower, and at 14 inches deep it is 1 inch shallower front to back, about the minimum a 12 inch frame needs.

If you have 41 inches of run and height or depth is the limit, this is the shape. If length is the limit, the standard 30 x 15 is the better fit.

How does this compare to the standard 30 x 15 Hertz Mille Pro MPS 300 enclosure?

Same driver, same construction, different shape. The standard box is 30 by 15 by 10.75 inches and holds 0.856 cubic feet net per chamber; this one is 41 by 14 by 8.375 inches and holds 0.804 cubic feet net per chamber.

The airspaces are within 0.052 cubic feet per chamber, so the alignment is close: Qtc 1.001 against 0.978 on the S2, 0.811 against 0.793 on the S4. The choice is about the shape of your space: the standard box when length is limited, this one when height or depth is the limit and you have 41 inches of run.

Should I use two S2 or two S4 drivers?

On this size the S4 is the better damped driver, with a free-air Qts of 0.42 against the S2's 0.51, landing at Qtc 0.811 per chamber versus 1.001. The S2 reaches deeper, F3 37.0 Hz against 39.4.

This is the opposite of the 10 inch MPS 250, where the S2 is the tighter driver. Whichever you choose, use two of the same model; mismatched drivers between chambers will not track each other.

How is this enclosure wired?

One side-mounted Proline X terminal cup with a single pair of posts, pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC to both driver positions in parallel. You do not wire the two chambers separately at the amplifier.

Both MPS 300 models are single voice coil, so the load is set by the model: a pair of S2 drivers in parallel presents 1 ohm, a pair of S4 drivers 2 ohms. Confirm that against your amplifier's minimum stable load before powering the system.

Why two separate chambers instead of one shared volume?

Two drivers sharing one sealed volume load each other: each driver's compression stroke becomes the pressure the other works against, which blurs the alignment either would have alone. A bonded full-height 3/4 inch divider gives each MPS 300 its own 0.804 cubic feet and its own polyfill.

It also means the alignment on this page is the alignment in each chamber, not an average across a shared box, and the divider ties the walls together across the 41 inch span.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted, and one cup serves both chambers. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment. On this cabinet that keeps the connection accessible with the enclosure installed, since both baffles face the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF, which keeps both chambers airtight under sustained pressure cycling. The chamber divider is a full-height bonded 3/4 inch panel. Corners are square, the Down Fire series standard.

Front baffles are double layer at 1.5 inches at both positions, outer layer machined as a flush recess, with two sets of 8/32 threaded inserts and stainless machine screws. Polyfill is installed as a light wall lining in each chamber. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Are the Hertz MPS 300 subwoofers included with this enclosure?

No. This listing is for the enclosure only. Bring your own pair of Hertz Mille Pro MPS 300 S2 or MPS 300 S4. The cutouts and mounting depth are direct fit at both positions; use two of the same model.
