This enclosure holds 0.924 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Arc Audio A12 runs a system Qtc of 1.21–1.34 with half power at 36.3–39.2 Hz, and the cone reaches its 8.0 mm travel limit at 153 W, below the driver’s 300 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. A 25 Hz subsonic filter adds little here: 156 W against 153 W, 2 percent. The box already resonates at 49–55 Hz, so its own rolloff has removed most of what the filter would have stopped.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 37.4–37.6
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 D2 37.6 D4 37.4
D2 · EBP 37.6D4 · EBP 37.4
EBP under 50 means a motor that wants a sealed load. The A12 sits at 37.4–37.6, inside that band, which is why this is a sealed build rather than a ported one.

02What the box does to it

0.924 cu ft against a 76.3 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 2.92  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 49–55 Hz  ·  Qtc = 1.21–1.34
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
D2 · Qtc 1.21, Fc 49 Hz, F3 36.3 HzD4 · Qtc 1.34, Fc 55 Hz, F3 39.2 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 25.0–27.0 Hz free-air to 49–55 Hz and half power lands at 36.3–39.2 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 8.0 mm, and in this alignment a subsonic filter barely moves it.

PXmax = 153–158 W unfiltered  →  156–159 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 8.0 mm 153 W reaches Xmax here
D2 · 153 W, no filterD4 · 158 W, no filterD2 · 156 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octD4 · 159 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 8.0 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 8.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 153 W, reached first at 40 Hz. It sits under the 300 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct, and they sit almost on top of the solid ones: 156 W against 153 W. At 49–55 Hz the filter sits well below resonance, where the sealed alignment has already rolled the cone off at 12 dB/oct, so there is little wasted travel left for it to recover. Set it anyway to keep road rumble out of the cone, but do not size the amplifier around it.

Installer's take

This is the A12 cabinet for people who have length and nothing else. 41 by 14 by 5.8125, which is 1.0625 inches lower than our standard 30 by 15 A12 box, on the same airspace.

The A12D2 has a 25.01 Hz free-air resonance and a 76.32 liter Vas behind a 3.85 inch mounting depth. The motor still clears the lid by 1.213 inches at this height, so airspace set it, not the driver.

Be straight with yourself about the alignment. Qts is 0.612 on the D2 and 0.659 on the D4, so at Arc's optimum volume the D2 lands at Qtc 1.211 and the D4 at 1.338. Underdamped, with a lift near the corner. That is what this driver does in a sealed box, and Arc's optimum puts it there on purpose. Take the D2 if your amplifier allows.

Arc states sealed volumes as gross. We built to 0.992 gross against their 1.0 optimum, which is 0.924 net. Compare carefully if you are cross-shopping against a brand that quotes net.

300 watts RMS, 600 musical. Arc is blunt that sustained power over RMS burns coils and is not warranty work. Clean power, watch the clipping.

Questions

Why is this cabinet 41 inches wide instead of 30?

Because some installs run out of height or depth before they run out of length. The standard Arc Audio A12 Down Fire cabinet is 30 by 15 by 6.875 inches; this one is 41 by 14 by 5.8125. Spreading the airspace along 11 more inches lets the cabinet stand 1.0625 inches lower, and at 14 inches deep it is 1 inch shallower front to back, about the minimum a 12 inch frame needs.

If you have 41 inches of run and height or depth is the limit, this is the shape. If length is the limit, the standard 30 x 15 is the better fit.

How does this compare to the standard 30 x 15 Arc Audio A12 enclosure?

Same driver, same construction, different shape. The standard box is 30 by 15 by 6.875 inches and holds 0.92 cubic feet net; this one is 41 by 14 by 5.8125 inches and holds 0.924 cubic feet net.

The airspace is matched, so the alignment is effectively the same. The choice is about the shape of your space: the standard box when length is limited, this one when height or depth is the limit and you have 41 inches of run.

Why is the Qtc above 1.2? Is this enclosure too small?

No. The cabinet measures 0.992 cubic feet gross, on Arc Audio's own 1.0 gross optimum. The Qtc comes from the driver: the A12 has a free-air Qts of 0.612 on the D2 and 0.659 on the D4, and in this volume that puts the system at Qtc 1.211 and 1.338. That is an underdamped alignment with a lift near the corner frequency, which is the A12's intended character. Arc also publishes a 1.25 gross maximum, the more damped build in a taller cabinet; contact us if you want that instead.

Should I choose the A12D2 or the A12D4?

The D2 is the better performer in this cabinet. It has the lower free-air resonance, 25.01 Hz against 26.995, and the lower Qts, 0.612 against 0.659, so it lands at Qtc 1.211 with F3 at 36.3 Hz, against Qtc 1.338 with F3 at 39.2 Hz on the D4. The D4 does carry higher motor force at 16.965 T against 13.948. Check what load your amplifier is stable into first, but if either works, take the A12D2.

How much power should I run to this subwoofer?

Arc rates the A12 at 300 watts RMS continuous with 600 watts musical. Their documentation is direct that sustained operation beyond the RMS rating will burn the voice coil, and that damage is treated as abuse rather than a warranty claim. Underpowering carries no risk, but a small amplifier driven into clipping does. Feed it clean, unclipped power in the 250 to 300 watt range.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. Corners are square, the Down Fire series standard.

The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. A windowed U-brace ties the long 41 inch panels together and polyfill is installed as a light wall lining. The double baffle carries real structural load with an 11.0 inch cutout in a cabinet 5.8125 inches tall. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Is the Arc Audio A12 subwoofer included with this enclosure?

No. This listing is for the enclosure only. Bring your own Arc Audio A12D2 or A12D4. The cutout and mounting depth are direct fit for either version.
