This enclosure holds 1.465 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Hertz Mille Pro MP 300 runs a system Qtc of 0.70–0.85 with half power at 35.0–40.4 Hz, and the cone reaches its 17.0 mm travel limit at 431 W, below the driver’s 600 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 549 W — +118 W, or 27 percent more power for the same 17.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 43.4–53.3
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 D4.3 53.3 D2.3 43.4
D4.3 · EBP 53.3D2.3 · EBP 43.4
The MP 300 straddles the boundary at 43.4–53.3 depending on coil — part sealed-band, part transition. Either way it takes a sealed load happily; the coil you run shifts the alignment more than it shifts this verdict.

02What the box does to it

1.465 cu ft against a 74.0 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 1.78  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 40–41 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.70–0.85
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
D4.3 · Qtc 0.70, Fc 40 Hz, F3 40.4 HzD2.3 · Qtc 0.85, Fc 41 Hz, F3 35.0 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 23.0–24.0 Hz free-air to 40–41 Hz and half power lands at 35.0–40.4 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 17.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 431–436 W unfiltered  →  549–655 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 12 16 20 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 17.0 mm 431 W reaches Xmax here
D4.3 · 431 W, no filterD2.3 · 436 W, no filterD4.3 · 655 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octD2.3 · 549 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 17.0 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 17.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 431 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits under the 600 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 549 W before hitting the same 17.0 mm. That is 27 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

86 dB sensitivity is the number to pay attention to on this driver. Most subwoofers in this program sit in the low to mid 80s; the MP 300 gets meaningfully louder on the same watts.

The 6.457 inch motor sets the height of this cabinet: 8 inches, with 0.793 above the motor. On 41 by 14 that height holds 1.465 net, more than the 1.126 the standard box holds and well past Hertz's 28 liters. That moves Qtc down, the safe way.

Coil matters more than usual because Hertz publishes two different T/S sets. The D4.3 lands at Qtc 0.701 with F3 at 40.4 Hz, just under flat. The D2.3 lands at 0.848 with F3 at 35.0 Hz, more lift and deeper. Pick for the sound you want, then check your amplifier load.

600 watts RMS. At 86 dB you do not need to chase the rating to get where you want to be.

Questions

Why is this cabinet 41 inches wide instead of 30?

Because some installs run out of height or depth before they run out of length. The standard Hertz Mille Pro MP 300 Down Fire cabinet is 30 by 15 by 8.125 inches; this one is 41 by 14 by 8. Spreading the airspace along 11 more inches lets the cabinet stand 0.125 inches lower, and at 14 inches deep it is 1 inch shallower front to back, about the minimum a 12 inch frame needs.

If you have 41 inches of run and height or depth is the limit, this is the shape. If length is the limit, the standard 30 x 15 is the better fit.

How does this compare to the standard 30 x 15 Hertz Mille Pro MP 300 enclosure?

Same driver, same construction, different shape. The standard box is 30 by 15 by 8.125 inches and holds 1.126 cubic feet net; this one is 41 by 14 by 8 inches and holds 1.465 cubic feet net.

The wide box holds more because the 6.457 inch motor sets its height, and on a longer footprint that height encloses more air. More air lowers Qtc, a softer, better damped corner. Choose the standard box when length is limited or you want the livelier alignment, this one when height or depth is the limit.

Why is this enclosure larger than Hertz's recommended 28 liters?

Because the driver's mounting depth sets the minimum cabinet height. The MP 300 mounts 6.457 inches deep, we leave 0.75 inch above the motor, and the cabinet cannot go under 8 inches. On a 41 by 14 footprint that height holds 1.465 cubic feet net, about 41 liters.

The extra volume lowers Qtc, which is the safe direction: the D4.3 lands at Qtc 0.701 with F3 at 40.4 Hz and the D2.3 at Qtc 0.848 with F3 at 35.0 Hz.

Should I choose the MP 300 D2.3 or the D4.3?

They are not the same driver on paper. Hertz publishes Fs 24 Hz, Qts 0.42 and 74 liters for the D4.3, and Fs 23 Hz, Qts 0.48 and 88 liters for the D2.3. In this cabinet the D4.3 is the controlled one, just under maximally flat, and the D2.3 has more lift near the corner and about 5.4 Hz more extension.

Choose the D4.3 for accuracy or the D2.3 for depth and weight, then confirm your amplifier is stable at the load you plan to wire.

Why is 86 dB sensitivity significant?

Because sensitivity sets how much output you get per watt. Most subwoofers in this category sit in the low to mid 80s, and high-excursion shallow drivers often drop to 81 or 82 dB. A 4 dB advantage is roughly two and a half times the acoustic output from the same amplifier power, so you reach your target on a smaller amplifier or with headroom to spare, which reduces thermal stress over long sessions.

How do I wire this enclosure and set my impedance?

The enclosure has one side-mounted Proline X terminal cup pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC. Final impedance is set at the driver: the MP 300 D2.3 has dual 2 ohm coils, 1 ohm parallel or 4 series, and the MP 300 D4.3 has dual 4 ohm coils, 2 ohms parallel or 8 series. Hertz rates the driver at 600 watts RMS. Confirm your amplifier is stable at your chosen load before powering the system.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. Corners are square, the Down Fire series standard.

The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. A windowed U-brace ties the long 41 inch panels together and polyfill is installed as a light wall lining. That matters with an 11.30 inch cutout and an 8.63 kg driver. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Is the Hertz MP 300 subwoofer included with this enclosure?

No. This listing is for the enclosure only. Bring your own Hertz Mille Pro MP 300 D2.3 or MP 300 D4.3. The cutout and mounting depth are cut specifically for this driver.
