This enclosure holds 1.539 cu ft net . In it the Focal SUB 30 KXE runs a system Qtc of 0.67 with half power at 44.7 Hz, and the cone reaches its 22.5 mm travel limit at 821 W, above the driver’s 800 W thermal rating, so heat stops you before travel does. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 1226 W — +406 W, or 49 percent more power for the same 22.5 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 59.2
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 dual 4 ohm, coils in series 59.2
dual 4 ohm, coils in series · EBP 59.2
At 59.2 the SUB 30 KXE sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

02What the box does to it

1.539 cu ft against a 50.0 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 1.15  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 42 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.67
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
dual 4 ohm, coils in series · Qtc 0.67, Fc 42 Hz, F3 44.7 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 29.0 Hz free-air to 42 Hz and half power lands at 44.7 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. Figures are Focal’s own SUB 30 KXE technical sheet. Vas is the one soft number: Focal prints 50 liters and draws its closed-box chart on it, while its own compliance implies 52.5 and the moving mass and resonance nearer 58; at 58 liters every Qtc on this page would read a few hundredths higher.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 22.5 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 821 W unfiltered  →  1226 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 8 16 24 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 22.5 mm 821 W reaches Xmax here
dual 4 ohm, coils in series · 821 W, no filterdual 4 ohm, coils in series · 1226 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 22.5 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 22.5 mm. Unfiltered that is 821 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits above the 800 W the driver can take thermally, so the voice coil gives up before the suspension does. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 1226 W before hitting the same 22.5 mm. That is 49 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

Measure the installed height, not the cabinet height. The box is 8.3125 tall on its own and the standoffs add 1.75, so plan around 10.0625 inches of stack on a 41 by 14 footprint.

The 6.77 inch motor sets this height, with 0.793 inch above it. At 8.3125 inches the wide footprint holds 1.539 net, more than the 1.30 the standard box was built to, so Qtc drops to 0.674 and F3 sits at 44.7 Hz. A shade under flat, well behaved. The box is 0.6775 inches lower than the standard one.

Floor slot is only 0.79 times the cone area at the 1.75 standoff; a 12 inch cone is bigger than the gap. It works, but taller feet or firing it forward is better if the floor allows.

Cutout is 11.23, not the 284 mm Loudspeaker Database lists: Focal's own drawing puts the basket at 284.2 mm. Inserts ship in the kit, not pressed: Focal prints no bolt circle. Mark from the driver, drill, press.

Questions

Why is this cabinet 41 inches wide instead of 30?

Because some installs run out of height or depth before they run out of length. The standard Focal SUB 30 KXE Down Fire cabinet is 30 by 15 by 8.99 inches; this one is 41 by 14 by 8.3125. Spreading the airspace along 11 more inches lets the cabinet stand 0.6775 inches lower, and at 14 inches deep it is 1 inch shallower front to back, about the minimum a 12 inch frame needs.

If you have 41 inches of run and height or depth is the limit, this is the shape. If length is the limit, the standard 30 x 15 is the better fit.

How does this compare to the standard 30 x 15 Focal SUB 30 KXE enclosure?

Same driver, same construction, different shape. The standard box is 30 by 15 by 8.99 inches and holds 1.30 cubic feet net; this one is 41 by 14 by 8.3125 inches and holds 1.539 cubic feet net.

The wide box holds more because the 6.77 inch motor sets its height, and on a longer footprint that height encloses more air. More air lowers Qtc, a softer, better damped corner. Choose the standard box when length is limited or you want the livelier alignment, this one when height or depth is the limit.

What amplifier power should I run, and how should I wire it?

Focal rates the SUB 30 KXE at 800 watts RMS and 1600 watts maximum, so target 560 to 800 watts RMS at the final load.

The SUB 30 KXE carries two 4 ohm voice coils (3.2 ohms DC each): wire them in parallel for a nominal 2 ohm load or in series for 8 ohms. Confirm your amplifier's minimum stable impedance first.

How tall is this once the standoffs are on?

The cabinet is 8.3125 inches tall measured in the down fire position, and that figure excludes the standoffs. The standoffs hold 1.75 inches under the baffle, so plan your space around a finished stack of roughly 10.0625 inches.

The footprint is 41 inches wide by 14 deep, the Down Fire Wide platform. Height is the only dimension solved to the driver.

Why is the front baffle double-layered?

The baffle is two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, 1.5 inches through. The KXE moves 1130 cubic centimeters of air at its 22.5 mm excursion limit. A single 3/4 inch panel flexes under that load, which smears output and works the driver loose over time; the second layer stiffens the face and gives the mounting hardware twice the material to bite.

The outer layer is machined as a flush recess to the 12.52 inch frame, so the driver bolts to the inner layer.

What is the expected low-frequency extension?

Anechoic, : F3 44.7 Hz with system resonance at 42.5 Hz (Qtc 0.674). Below Qtc 0.707 the rolloff is gentle and F3 sits above fc, which is what a well-damped sealed box does.

Those figures exclude cabin gain. In a car the cabin's transfer function adds real output below 50 Hz, so in-vehicle response runs deeper than the numbers above.

Do I need to add polyfill or damping?

No. Polyfill is already installed as a light wall lining to control internal reflections, and the quantity is chosen so it does not change the acoustic volume.

Do not add more. Packing a sealed box with fill makes it behave as though it were larger, which walks the alignment away from the 1.539 cubic feet this cabinet was built to.

Is the driver included, and are the threaded inserts installed?

No driver. This is an enclosure only. You receive the cabinet finished in plush black carpet, one side-mounted pre-wired terminal cup, the polyfill lining already in place, the standoffs, and a threaded insert kit with stainless machine screws.

The inserts ship loose on purpose: Focal prints no bolt circle for the SUB 30 KXE, so you set the driver in the recess, mark its holes, drill and press the inserts. The Focal SUB 30 KXE is purchased separately.
