This enclosure holds 1.252 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Diamond Audio DMD122SH runs a system Qtc of 1.05–1.25 with half power at 46.4–48.4 Hz, and the cone reaches its 7.9 mm travel limit at 236 W, below the driver’s 300 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. A 25 Hz subsonic filter adds little here: 237 W against 236 W, 0 percent. The box already resonates at 63–64 Hz, so its own rolloff has removed most of what the filter would have stopped.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 45.6–54.8
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 D2 54.8 D4 45.6
D2 · EBP 54.8D4 · EBP 45.6
The DMD122SH straddles the boundary at 45.6–54.8 depending on coil — part sealed-band, part transition. Either way it takes a sealed load happily; the coil you run shifts the alignment more than it shifts this verdict.

02What the box does to it

1.252 cu ft against a 30.7 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 0.87  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 63–64 Hz  ·  Qtc = 1.05–1.25
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
D2 · Qtc 1.05, Fc 63 Hz, F3 48.4 HzD4 · Qtc 1.25, Fc 64 Hz, F3 46.4 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 46.0–46.5 Hz free-air to 63–64 Hz and half power lands at 46.4–48.4 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. This enclosure ships without a driver, so both coil variants the maker offers are plotted. They do not load the same box the same way.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 7.9 mm, and in this alignment a subsonic filter barely moves it.

PXmax = 236–250 W unfiltered  →  237–251 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 7.9 mm 236 W reaches Xmax here
D2 · 250 W, no filterD4 · 236 W, no filterD2 · 251 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octD4 · 237 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 7.9 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 7.9 mm. Unfiltered that is 236 W, reached first at 52 Hz. It sits under the 300 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct, and they sit almost on top of the solid ones: 237 W against 236 W. At 63–64 Hz the filter sits well below resonance, where the sealed alignment has already rolled the cone off at 12 dB/oct, so there is little wasted travel left for it to recover. Set it anyway to keep road rumble out of the cone, but do not size the amplifier around it.

Installer's take

3.00 inch mounting depth, so the motor has 3.312 inches of room above it in this cabinet. Height here is pure airspace: 1.252 net, the same air as the standard box, in a cabinet 7.0625 tall instead of 8.3125.

Coil choice matters. The D2 runs Qts 0.77, the D4 runs 0.91, and Qtc can never fall below Qts in a sealed box. In this cabinet the D2 lands at Qtc 1.052 and the D4 at 1.246. The D4 has the stronger motor and longer excursion, but for sealed use the D2 is the better damped driver.

Our numbers will not match Diamond's enclosure table. Run their own published Qts and Vas through sealed box math and the table does not come back; it looks like the two were produced separately. We publish what the T/S gives.

Fs is 46 Hz, so F3 sits in the high 40s. This is a punch driver in a shallow frame. Cabin gain does the rest.

Questions

Why is this cabinet 41 inches wide instead of 30?

Because some installs run out of height or depth before they run out of length. The standard Diamond Audio DMD-SH 12 Down Fire cabinet is 30 by 15 by 8.3125 inches; this one is 41 by 14 by 7.0625. Spreading the airspace along 11 more inches lets the cabinet stand 1.25 inches lower, and at 14 inches deep it is 1 inch shallower front to back, about the minimum a 12 inch frame needs.

If you have 41 inches of run and height or depth is the limit, this is the shape. If length is the limit, the standard 30 x 15 is the better fit.

How does this compare to the standard 30 x 15 Diamond Audio DMD-SH 12 enclosure?

Same driver, same construction, different shape. The standard box is 30 by 15 by 8.3125 inches and holds 1.213 cubic feet net; this one is 41 by 14 by 7.0625 inches and holds 1.252 cubic feet net. The standard box is listed at 1.25, but our solver puts its true net at 1.213.

The airspace is matched, so the alignment is effectively the same. The choice is about the shape of your space: the standard box when length is limited, this one when height or depth is the limit and you have 41 inches of run.

Should I choose the DMD122SH or the DMD124SH?

For a sealed enclosure the DMD122SH is the better damped choice. Its free-air Qts is 0.77 against 0.91, and since system Qtc can never fall below the driver's Qts, the D4 is underdamped in any sealed box. In this cabinet the D2 lands at Qtc 1.052 with F3 at 48.4 Hz, and the D4 at Qtc 1.246 with F3 at 46.4 Hz.

The D4 carries more motor force, 16.4 T against 13.7, and more excursion, 8.8mm against 7.9mm, and its extra lift puts F3 about 2 Hz lower. Check your amplifier's stable impedance first; if either works, take the D2 for control or the D4 for a fuller corner.

Why don't your Qtc figures match the ones in Diamond's manual?

Because Diamond's enclosure table does not reconcile with the Thiele-Small parameters printed on the same page. Running their own published Qts and Vas through standard sealed box math at their suggested volume gives a noticeably higher Qtc than their table prints, and every variant is off in the same direction.

That gap is too large to be a gross versus net convention issue. We publish figures computed directly from the driver parameters, because those are what the driver will do in this enclosure.

Why is this enclosure larger than Diamond Audio's suggestion?

Because the alignment is better. Diamond suggests 0.75 gross; at 1.252 cubic feet net both coils are better damped and reach a little lower than they would in the smaller box. Diamond's own manual presents its enclosure table as a suggestion rather than a specification. On the wide footprint the extra air costs very little height: this cabinet is 7.0625 inches tall.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. Corners are square, the Down Fire series standard.

The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. A windowed U-brace ties the long 41 inch panels together and polyfill is installed as a light wall lining. The double baffle carries real structural load around an 11.06 inch cutout. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Is the Diamond Audio DMD-SH subwoofer included with this enclosure?

No. This listing is for the enclosure only. Bring your own Diamond Audio DMD122SH or DMD124SH. The cutout and mounting depth are direct fit for either version.
