This enclosure holds 1.383 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Arc Audio ARC 12 runs a system Qtc of 0.71–0.80 with half power at 35.6–38.8 Hz, and the cone reaches its 15.0 mm travel limit at 288 W, below the driver’s 350 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 403 W — +115 W, or 40 percent more power for the same 15.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 43.5–48.6
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 D2 48.6 D4 43.5
D2 · EBP 48.6D4 · EBP 43.5
EBP under 50 means a motor that wants a sealed load. The ARC 12 sits at 43.5–48.6, inside that band, which is why this is a sealed build rather than a ported one.

02What the box does to it

1.383 cu ft against a 74.4 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 1.90  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 39–40 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.71–0.80
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
D2 · Qtc 0.71, Fc 39 Hz, F3 38.8 HzD4 · Qtc 0.80, Fc 40 Hz, F3 35.6 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 22.8–23.2 Hz free-air to 39–40 Hz and half power lands at 35.6–38.8 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. This enclosure ships without a driver, so both coil variants the maker offers are plotted. They do not load the same box the same way.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 15.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 288–299 W unfiltered  →  403–446 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 12 16 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 15.0 mm 288 W reaches Xmax here
D2 · 288 W, no filterD4 · 299 W, no filterD2 · 446 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octD4 · 403 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 15.0 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 15.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 288 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits under the 350 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 403 W before hitting the same 15.0 mm. That is 40 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

The ARC 12 mounts 6 inches deep, and on a down fire box the motor rises into the cabinet. Add the 0.75 inch we leave above it and the cabinet cannot go under 7.5 inches. That number is fixed by the driver, not chosen.

Stretch that height across 41 by 14 and you get 1.383 net, well above the 1.085 the standard box was built to, and above ARC's own 1.25 gross maximum. I would rather tell you that than hide it. The effect runs the safe way: the Dual 2-Ohm drops to Qtc 0.708, right on maximally flat, and the Dual 4-Ohm to 0.803.

Pick your coil deliberately. The Dual 2-Ohm is the controlled one, F3 38.8 Hz. The Dual 4-Ohm has a little more lift and reaches 35.6 Hz.

89 dB sensitivity means this driver gets loud on modest power. Stay inside 350 watts RMS and use a subsonic filter; a big sealed box asks a little more of the suspension down low.

Questions

Why is this cabinet 41 inches wide instead of 30?

Because some installs run out of height or depth before they run out of length. The standard ARC Audio ARC 12 Down Fire cabinet is 30 by 15 by 7.625 inches; this one is 41 by 14 by 7.5. Spreading the airspace along 11 more inches lets the cabinet stand 0.125 inches lower, and at 14 inches deep it is 1 inch shallower front to back, about the minimum a 12 inch frame needs.

If you have 41 inches of run and height or depth is the limit, this is the shape. If length is the limit, the standard 30 x 15 is the better fit.

How does this compare to the standard 30 x 15 ARC Audio ARC 12 enclosure?

Same driver, same construction, different shape. The standard box is 30 by 15 by 7.625 inches and holds 1.085 cubic feet net; this one is 41 by 14 by 7.5 inches and holds 1.383 cubic feet net.

The wide box holds more because the 6 inch motor sets its height, and on a longer footprint that height encloses more air. More air lowers Qtc, a softer, better damped corner. Choose the standard box when length is limited or you want the livelier alignment, this one when height or depth is the limit.

Should I choose the Dual 2-Ohm or the Dual 4-Ohm ARC 12?

They behave differently in the same box. The Dual 2-Ohm has a Qts of 0.416 and lands at Qtc 0.708 with Fc and F3 both at 38.8 Hz, the flatter, better damped alignment. The Dual 4-Ohm has a Qts of 0.468 and lands at Qtc 0.803 with F3 at 35.6 Hz, about 3 Hz deeper with more lift near the corner.

If accuracy matters most, take the Dual 2-Ohm. If you want the fullest bottom end, take the Dual 4-Ohm. The cabinet is cut identically for both, so the other consideration is which final impedance suits your amplifier.

Does this enclosure match ARC Audio's recommended volume?

No, and we would rather say so. ARC publishes 0.9 minimum, 1.1 optimum and 1.25 maximum, all gross. This cabinet is 1.462 cubic feet gross and 1.383 net, above their maximum.

The 6 inch mounting depth needs 7.5 inches of cabinet height once we leave 0.75 inch above the motor, and that height on a 41 by 14 footprint encloses more air than ARC asks for. More air lowers Qtc, which is the safe direction. If you want ARC's window, the standard 30 x 15 box sits inside it.

How much power should I run to the ARC 12?

ARC Audio rates the ARC 12 at 350 watts RMS continuous with 700 watts musical, and lists an amplifier range of 5 to 700 watts. Sustained operation above RMS burns the voice coil and is not covered under warranty.

At 89 dB sensitivity it does not need to be pushed. In a box this size run a subsonic filter, keep the amplifier clean, and treat 350 watts as the ceiling.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. Corners are square, the Down Fire series standard.

The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. A windowed U-brace ties the long 41 inch panels together and polyfill is installed as a light wall lining. The motor clears the top panel by 0.75 inch. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Is the ARC 12 subwoofer included with this enclosure?

No. This listing is for the enclosure only. Bring your own ARC Audio ARC 12 in either coil configuration. The cutout and mounting depth are cut specifically for this driver.
