01Is this driver right for a ported box?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 45.5
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 EBP 45.5
American Bass Hawk Slim 12 D4 · EBP 45.5
Under 50 the raw number leans sealed. The American Bass Hawk Slim 12 D4 reads 45.5, so this is a ported build against the grain of its own EBP: it works because the alignment is tuned for in-car response rather than for an anechoic curve, and because the cabinet holds port area and volume the driver can actually use.

02What the box does to it

1.43 cu ft net against a 33.9 L Vas, vented at 40.0 Hz.

Fb = 40.0 Hz  ·  F3 = 36.7 Hz  ·  passband ripple 3.19 dB
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +8 +4 0 −4 −8 −12 −16 −20 −24 −28 −32 −36 −40 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB Fb 40.0
American Bass Hawk Slim 12 D4 · Fb 40.0 Hz, F3 36.7 Hz
Anechoic, before any cabin gain, with the 32 Hz subsonic filter already applied. The vent takes over below 40 Hz and the cone stops doing the work there, which is what holds travel down at the bottom of the passband.

03Ported vs Sealed

No sealed comparison is shown for this driver.

A ported-versus-sealed chart is only worth reading against a sealed box someone would actually build: the one we make for the driver, or the one its maker recommends. Neither exists for the American Bass Hawk Slim 12 D4 — we do not build a sealed enclosure for it and American Bass publish no sealed volume for it — so rather than compare this cabinet against itself stuffed and sealed, a box no one would build, the comparison is left out.

04The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on American Bass's published 8.5 mm. The two traces are the same cabinet with the subsonic filter switched on and switched off.

PXmax = 870 W with a 32 Hz subsonic  ·  115 W with none  →  the filter is worth 7.6×
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 8.5 mm 870 W reaches Xmax here
870 W · subsonic at 32 Hz, 24 dB/oct115 W · no subsonic filterXmax 8.5 mm one-way, published
Each trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts the cone on 8.5 mm. With a 32 Hz subsonic that takes 870 W, reached first at 29 Hz. Take the filter away and the same cabinet reaches 8.5 mm on 115 W — the filter is worth 7.6× the safe power. A vent unloads the cone below tuning, so there is nothing holding it once the box stops loading: on a sealed build a subsonic filter is an improvement, here it is required equipment. The unfiltered trace is still rising where this chart stops at 20 Hz, so treat 115 W as a bound rather than a floor. Every wattage on this page is a MECHANICAL limit, not an electrical one. It is the power at which the cone runs out of linear travel in this cabinet, and nothing more. What the voice coil can dissipate as heat is a separate ceiling set by the driver, not by the box — American Bass rate this one at 900 W RMS, and the port binds before either here: it is sized for 700 W, below that rating, because above it the air at the mouth passes the chuff threshold, so treat 700 W as the ceiling on this cabinet and the travel figures above as headroom. Final wired impedance, amplifier output and how long you hold the level are all electrical questions this graph does not answer.

Installer's take

This is the deepest-reaching of the three Hawk Slim 12 boxes: 1.43 cubic feet at 40.0 Hz gets it to 36.7 Hz anechoic, in a cabinet only 7.75 inches tall because the motor is 3.54 deep.

It is sized for 700 W, not 900. Past that the slot chuffs before the cone is in trouble. The ported wedge takes 800 W if the customer has more amplifier; the sealed wedge is a 210 W box.

It is for the HAWKSLIM-1244, dual 4 ohm: 8 ohms series or 2 ohms parallel. It ships dry. Do not add polyfill to a ported box. Set your subsonic filter at 32 Hz.

Questions

Why is this enclosure tuned to 40.0 Hz?

A Qts of 0.713 is above the 0.707 of a flat sealed alignment, and with 8.5 mm of Xmax a sealed box runs the cone out of travel near 210 W. The down fire's port holds the cone nearly still around tuning: the slot runs 15.4 m/s in the channel and 14.7 at the mouth at 700 W, with the cone at 7.6 of its 8.5 mm. Of our three Hawk Slim 12 boxes this one reaches lowest. American Bass's own ported recommendation is 0.9 to 1.2 cubic feet; this box is 1.43. Tuning is chosen for in-car response rather than for an anechoic curve: a vehicle adds roughly 12 dB per octave below about 45 Hz, so a box tuned very low reinforces a region the cabin is already reinforcing and leaves 40 to 60 Hz thin. In this cabinet that lands at 5.8 dB of in-car spread across 25 to 60 Hz, which is where kick and bass fundamentals live.

Does this enclosure ship with polyfill?

No, and on this build in particular do not add any. Every sealed Proline X enclosure ships with polyfill pre-installed; a ported one must not, because damping material changes the effective volume the port is tuned against. The port on this cabinet is cut to 27.10 inches of centreline path for 40.0 Hz. Stuff it and you move the tuning without shortening the port, which gives you a mistuned box rather than a bigger-sounding one. The 3.19 dB passband you are paying for depends on it staying dry.

Do I need a subsonic filter?

Yes, at 32 Hz, 24 dB per octave. Below tuning a vented box stops loading the cone and excursion runs away toward DC. With the filter in place this cabinet puts the American Bass Hawk Slim 12 at 90 percent of its usable travel at full rated power; without it there is no meaningful number to quote, because the excursion curve does not converge. On a sealed build a subsonic filter is an improvement. Here it is required equipment.

How much power can I run?

700 W RMS. American Bass rate the Hawk Slim 12 at 900 W RMS, but on this cabinet the port binds first: the slot is sized for 700 W, and above that the air at the mouth passes the 17 metre per second chuff threshold. The cone is not the limit; it sits at 90 percent of usable travel at 700 W. None of our boxes carries the full 900 W cleanly on this driver: the ported wedge is sized for 800 W, and the sealed wedge runs out of cone travel near 210 W.

Would a sealed box be better for me?

Not one we can show you. We do not build a sealed enclosure for the American Bass Hawk Slim 12 and American Bass publish no sealed volume for it, so the Performance Graphs tab carries no ported-versus-sealed chart: the only sealed box left to plot would be this cabinet stuffed and sealed, which nobody would build, and a comparison against it would tell you nothing you could buy. What a vented box gives up is the region below tuning, where the cone unloads and the 32 Hz subsonic filter takes over; around 40.0 Hz the vent carries the load and cone travel drops to its minimum, which no sealed alignment can do.

What is the L-wrap port and why does it matter?

It is a slot port formed by one folded wall: a leg down the long side of the cabinet past the woofer ring, one faceted 90 degree bend, and a leg across the end opening through a chamfered corner. On this cabinet that is 27.10 inches of centreline path and 29.7 square inches of channel, exiting a 30.9 square inch mouth. Air leaves at 14.7 metres per second at tuning against a 17.0 threshold, and the channel runs at 32 percent of its turbulence limit. One wall and one bend rather than a serpentine's three means less wall area inside the box, fewer joints to leak, and one place for flow to separate instead of three.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery in 0.75 inch Langboard Elite MDF with a double-layer 1.5 inch baffle. The driver mounts to a 13.625 inch ring bonded under the baffle in a machined recess, carrying eight #8-32 hurricane nuts so it threads into steel rather than MDF. A windowed brace sits 3.35 inches clear of the cutout edge and 1.98 inches clear of the port terminus; the window is not weight saving, a solid panel there would split the cavity and make the box a bandpass. Walls seat into dados in both the lid and the baffle. Square corners, plush black carpet, side-mounted terminal cup.

Is the Hawk Slim 12 included?

No. This is an enclosure only, cut and folded for the American Bass Hawk Slim 12 specifically. The 10.900 inch cutout, the 3.540 inch mounting depth allowance and the 1.43 cubic foot alignment all come from American Bass's published parameters for this exact driver, and the port is sized against its Xmax and power rating. It is not a universal box with a 12 inch hole in it. Bring your own driver.
