01Is this driver right for a ported box?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 59.2
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 EBP 59.2
AudioControl SPC-12S2 · EBP 59.2
Between 50 and 100 a driver takes either load, and the choice becomes one of priorities rather than of physics. The AudioControl SPC-12S2 reads 59.2. Ported buys output and low-end reach around tuning; sealed buys a shallower rolloff below it. This cabinet takes the first trade.

02What the box does to it

2.34 cu ft net against a 149.1 L Vas, vented at 31.5 Hz.

Fb = 31.5 Hz  ·  F3 = 39.8 Hz  ·  passband ripple 0.65 dB
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +4 0 −4 −8 −12 −16 −20 −24 −28 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB Fb 31.5
AudioControl SPC-12S2 · Fb 31.5 Hz, F3 39.8 Hz
Anechoic, before any cabin gain, with the 25 Hz subsonic filter already applied. The vent takes over below 32 Hz and the cone stops doing the work there, which is what holds travel down at the bottom of the passband.

03Ported vs Sealed

No sealed comparison is shown for this driver.

A ported-versus-sealed chart is only worth reading against a sealed box someone would actually build: the one we make for the driver, or the one its maker recommends. Neither exists for the AudioControl SPC-12S2 — we do not build a sealed enclosure for it and AudioControl publish no sealed volume for it — so rather than compare this cabinet against itself stuffed and sealed, a box no one would build, the comparison is left out.

04The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts both cones exactly on AudioControl's published 9.0 mm. The two traces are the same cabinet with the subsonic filter switched on and switched off. Every power figure in this section is for the pair, split evenly.

PXmax = 1627 W with a 25 Hz subsonic  ·  306 W with none  →  the filter is worth 5.3×
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 9.0 mm 1627 W reaches Xmax here
1627 W · subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct306 W · no subsonic filterXmax 9.0 mm one-way, published
Each trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts the cone on 9.0 mm. With a 25 Hz subsonic that takes 1627 W, reached first at 51 Hz. Take the filter away and the same cabinet reaches 9.0 mm on 306 W — the filter is worth 5.3× the safe power. A vent unloads the cone below tuning, so there is nothing holding it once the box stops loading: on a sealed build a subsonic filter is an improvement, here it is required equipment. The unfiltered trace is still rising where this chart stops at 20 Hz, so treat 306 W as a bound rather than a floor. Every wattage on this page is a MECHANICAL limit, not an electrical one. It is the power at which the cone runs out of linear travel in this cabinet, and nothing more. What the voice coil can dissipate as heat is a separate ceiling set by the driver, not by the box — AudioControl rate this one at 800 W RMS, and that is the number that binds first here: heat stops you before travel does, so treat 800 W as the ceiling and the travel figures above as headroom. Final wired impedance, amplifier output and how long you hold the level are all electrical questions this graph does not answer.

Installer's take

Two SPC12s on 2.34 cubic feet at 31.5 Hz, one shared chamber, 39.8 Hz anechoic. The mouth runs about 13 m/s with both at 400 watts.

Drivers sit at 8.625 and 23.375 from the mouth side, braces between them, each motor inside a brace window.

AudioControl prints no bolt circle, so the baffle ships undrilled with a threaded insert kit and stainless machine screws: set each driver in its recess, mark its holes, drill and press the inserts. Ships dry, subsonic near 26 Hz.

Questions

Why is this enclosure tuned to 31.5 Hz?

This cabinet gives the pair 2.34 cubic feet in one shared chamber, 1.17 per driver, vented at 31.5 Hz through a 24.7 square inch triangular port, and reaches 39.8 Hz anechoic in a 32 by 16 inch dual wedge. The port runs 20.2 m/s in the channel and 13.3 at the flared mouth with both drivers at 400 watts, and each cone peaks at 6.3 of its 9 mm. Passband ripple is 0.6 dB. Our sealed dual wedge (PO 12D-S W SPC12) holds 1.25 cubic feet per chamber at Qtc 0.74 with half power at 47 Hz; this ported box reaches deeper.

Why the 20 degree wedge, and why rear-firing?

The rake on the back matches a factory rear seat so the cabinet sits flush and the trunk floor in front stays usable; the baffle is vertical and fires rearward, using the trunk as an acoustic extension.

Do I need a subsonic filter?

Yes. Below 31.5 Hz the port no longer controls the cones; set the filter near 26 Hz.

How much power can I run, and at what impedance?

AudioControl rates the SPC-12 at 400 watts RMS per driver, 800 across the pair; aim for 280 to 400 per driver. A pair of SPC-12S2 (one 2 ohm coil each) is 1 ohms in parallel or 4 ohms in series. A pair of SPC-12S4 (one 4 ohm coil each) is 2 ohms in parallel or 8 ohms in series.

Would a sealed box be better for me?

Our sealed dual wedge for the SPC12 holds 1.25 cubic feet per chamber at Qtc 0.74, half power 47 Hz: tighter and smaller. This ported box reaches 39.8 Hz on the same pair.

How does the side port work?

The port is a triangular slot along the back, 21.1 inches of path, exiting through the side panel with a rounded mouth so the air leaves without a sharp edge to chuff on.

Does this enclosure ship with polyfill?

No, and do not add any: fill in a ported box detunes it.

Are the SPC12s included?

No. This is an enclosure only, for a pair you supply. It fits both AudioControl versions, the SPC-12S2 (single 2 ohm) and the SPC-12S4 (single 4 ohm); the pair is tuned on the SPC-12S2 and the SPC-12S4 was run through the same cabinet: F3 42.7 Hz, ripple 0.9 dB, each cone 6.5 of its 9 mm at 400 W. You receive the cabinet in plush black carpet with the gloss black acrylic insert, the side-mounted pre-wired terminal cup and a threaded insert kit with stainless machine screws.
