Performance in this enclosure
01Is this driver right for a ported box?
Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.
02What the box does to it
2.18 cu ft net against a 118.4 L Vas, vented at 31.5 Hz.
03Ported vs Sealed
No sealed comparison is shown for this driver.
04The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)
Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts both cones exactly on AudioControl's published 8.5 mm. The two traces are the same cabinet with the subsonic filter switched on and switched off. Every power figure in this section is for the pair, split evenly.
From the shop floor
Installer's take
Two EPICX12s on 2.18 cubic feet at 31.5 Hz, one shared chamber, 39.9 Hz anechoic. The mouth runs about 13 m/s with both at 500 watts.
Drivers sit at 8.625 and 23.375 from the mouth side, braces between them, each motor inside a brace window.
AudioControl prints no bolt circle, so the baffle ships undrilled with a threaded insert kit and stainless machine screws: set each driver in its recess, mark its holes, drill and press the inserts. Ships dry, subsonic near 26 Hz.

Questions
Why is this enclosure tuned to 31.5 Hz?
This cabinet gives the pair 2.18 cubic feet in one shared chamber, 1.09 per driver, vented at 31.5 Hz through a 26.4 square inch triangular port, and reaches 39.9 Hz anechoic in a 32 by 16 inch dual wedge. The port runs 19.6 m/s in the channel and 13.1 at the flared mouth with both drivers at 500 watts, and each cone peaks at 7.2 of its 8.5 mm. Passband ripple is 1.5 dB. Our sealed dual wedge (PO 12D-S W EPICX12) holds 1.25 cubic feet per chamber at Qtc 0.89 with half power at 41 Hz; this ported box reaches deeper.
Why the 20 degree wedge, and why rear-firing?
The rake on the back matches a factory rear seat so the cabinet sits flush and the trunk floor in front stays usable; the baffle is vertical and fires rearward, using the trunk as an acoustic extension.
Do I need a subsonic filter?
Yes. Below 31.5 Hz the port no longer controls the cones; set the filter near 26 Hz.
How much power can I run, and at what impedance?
AudioControl rates the EPICX12 at 500 watts RMS per driver, 1000 across the pair; aim for 350 to 500 per driver. Each EPICX12 D2 has two 2 ohm coils: a pair lands on 2 ohms with each woofer's coils in series and the two woofers in parallel, or 8 ohms all in series. 0.5 ohm, everything in parallel, is outside what most amplifiers are built for. A pair of EPICX12 D4 (two 4 ohm coils each) lands on 4 ohms with each woofer's coils in series and the woofers in parallel, or 1 ohm with everything in parallel if the amplifier is rated for it.
Would a sealed box be better for me?
Our sealed dual wedge for the EPICX12 holds 1.25 cubic feet per chamber at Qtc 0.89, half power 41 Hz: tighter and smaller. This ported box reaches 39.9 Hz on the same pair.
How does the side port work?
The port is a triangular slot along the back, 24.8 inches of path, exiting through the side panel with a rounded mouth so the air leaves without a sharp edge to chuff on.
Does this enclosure ship with polyfill?
No, and do not add any: fill in a ported box detunes it.
Are the EPICX12s included?
No. This is an enclosure only, for a pair you supply. It fits both AudioControl versions, the EPICX12 D2 (dual 2 ohm) and the EPICX12 D4 (dual 4 ohm); the pair is tuned on the EPICX12 D2 and the EPICX12 D4 was run through the same cabinet: F3 40.8 Hz, ripple 1.9 dB, each cone 7.4 of its 8.5 mm at 500 W. You receive the cabinet in plush black carpet with the gloss black acrylic insert, the side-mounted pre-wired terminal cup and a threaded insert kit with stainless machine screws.
