01Is this driver right for a ported box?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 42.6
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 EBP 42.6
Sony XS-W124ES 4 ohm · EBP 42.6
Under 50 the raw number leans sealed. The Sony XS-W124ES 4 ohm reads 42.6, so this is a ported build against the grain of its own EBP: it works because the alignment is tuned for in-car response rather than for an anechoic curve, and because the cabinet holds port area and volume the driver can actually use.

02What the box does to it

1.41 cu ft net against a 34.4 L Vas, vented at 37.5 Hz.

Sony XS-W124ES 4 ohm · Fb 37.5 Hz, F3 34.8 Hz
Anechoic, before any cabin gain, with the 30 Hz subsonic filter already applied. The vent takes over below 38 Hz and the cone stops doing the work there, which is what holds travel down at the bottom of the passband.

03Perceived Ported vs Sealed

This cabinet, 1.41 cu ft net vented at 37.5 Hz, against Sony's recommended sealed box, 0.84 cu ft.

Shaded blue is where the ported alignment is louder for the same power, orange where the sealed one is. The sealed curve is Sony's recommended sealed box, 0.84 cu ft, not this cabinet with the port blocked: two different boxes, because that is the choice a buyer actually has. Across 25 to 60 Hz the vent is worth 4.9 dB at its widest and 4.3 dB on average. This is the anechoic picture, which is not what you hear in a car.

04Real World Ported vs Sealed

The same two boxes with cabin gain applied, 45 Hz corner, 18 dB ceiling.

Flatness across 25–60 Hz: ported 3.8 dB spread, the 0.84 cu ft sealed box 4.8 dB
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +8 +4 0 −4 −8 −12 −16 −20 −24 −28 −32 −36 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB +4.9 dB at 31 Hz
Ported, in-car · 3.8 dB spreadSony's recommended sealed, 0.84 cu ft net, in-car · 4.8 dB spread
Cabin gain lifts both boxes by the same amount, so the gap between them does not change: what changes is the shape each one ends up with. A car pressurises below roughly 45 Hz, which fills in the sealed box's shallower rolloff and over-drives it where the ported box is already flat. Across 25 to 60 Hz, the band kick and bass fundamentals occupy, this alignment holds 3.8 dB of spread against 4.8 dB for Sony's recommended sealed box, 0.84 cu ft. Flatter is the whole point of tuning this high. The two alignments converge at the bottom of the band rather than crossing cleanly, so there is no meaningful subsonic advantage either way here. Cabin gain here is a house assumption, not a measurement of your vehicle.

05The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on Sony's published 8.9 mm. The two traces are the same cabinet with the subsonic filter switched on and switched off.

PXmax = 773 W with a 30 Hz subsonic  ·  104 W with none  →  the filter is worth 7.4×
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 8.9 mm 773 W reaches Xmax here
773 W · subsonic at 30 Hz, 24 dB/oct104 W · no subsonic filterXmax 8.9 mm one-way, published
Each trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts the cone on 8.9 mm. With a 30 Hz subsonic that takes 773 W, reached first at 27 Hz. Take the filter away and the same cabinet reaches 8.9 mm on 104 W — the filter is worth 7.4× the safe power. A vent unloads the cone below tuning, so there is nothing holding it once the box stops loading: on a sealed build a subsonic filter is an improvement, here it is required equipment. The unfiltered trace is still rising where this chart stops at 20 Hz, so treat 104 W as a bound rather than a floor. Every wattage on this page is a MECHANICAL limit, not an electrical one. It is the power at which the cone runs out of linear travel in this cabinet, and nothing more. What the voice coil can dissipate as heat is a separate ceiling set by the driver, not by the box — Sony rate this one at 500 W RMS, and that is the number that binds first here: heat stops you before travel does, so treat 500 W as the ceiling and the travel figures above as headroom. Final wired impedance, amplifier output and how long you hold the level are all electrical questions this graph does not answer.

Installer's take

I built this box for one XS-W124ES on the full Professional chassis: three layers of baffle with the frame flush in the outer one, the Sony acrylic beside it, and a slot port that turns once along the back wall so a 37.5 Hz tuning fits a 10 inch deep box.

This driver is a high-Q twelve, Qts 0.77, so it wants a port, and it is one of the drivers that builds in all three of our ported chassis. The Performance Optimized wedge and down fire are the smaller, cheaper boxes. This one is the front-firing cabinet with the flush baffle, for a build where the woofer faces the listener.

Sony publish their bolt circle, so the inserts are pressed at the shop on 12.126 inches.

Single 4 ohm coil, 500 watts RMS by Sony's CTA-2031 rating. It ships dry. Do not add polyfill to a ported box. Set your subsonic filter at 30 Hz.

Questions

Why is this enclosure tuned to 37.5 Hz?

A Qts of 0.77 means no sealed box reaches Butterworth: sealed at 1.25 cubic feet it is a Qtc of 1.08, in Sony's own 0.84 cubic foot box 1.20. Vented, the driver settles. The slot is gated at 600 W, 1.2 times Sony's rating: the channel runs 22.4 m/s against a 22.6 gate and the mouth 11.6, and the cone peaks at 7.8 of its 8.9 mm with the subsonic filter in place. Tuning is chosen for in-car response rather than an anechoic curve: a vehicle adds roughly 12 dB per octave below about 45 Hz, and this tuning is where that sum comes out flattest across 25 to 60 Hz.

Why is this a Professional build and not a Performance Optimized box?

The XS-W124ES also builds in the Performance Optimized ported wedge and ported down-fire, the smaller and cheaper boxes. The Professional cabinet is the step up for it: a 2.25 inch three-layer baffle with the woofer flush in the outer layer, and a slot port gated at 600 W. It carries a 2 year warranty, against 1 year on the Performance Optimized lines.

Threaded inserts or a kit?

Threaded inserts pressed into the baffle on the published 12.126 inch bolt circle, stainless machine screws included. The inserts are in the baffle when it arrives; the machine screws are in the terminal cup bag.

Do I need a subsonic filter?

Yes, at 30 Hz, 24 dB per octave. Below tuning a vented box stops loading the cone and excursion runs away toward DC. With the filter in place this cabinet puts the Sony XS-W124ES at 88 percent of its usable travel at 600 W.

Would a sealed box be better for me?

The two alignments converge at the bottom of the band on this driver rather than crossing cleanly, so there is no meaningful subsonic advantage either way. Above 25 Hz the vent is the louder of the two for the same power. The Performance Graphs tab plots this cabinet, 1.41 cubic feet vented at 37.5 Hz, against Sony's recommended sealed box, 0.84 cu ft, so you can judge it yourself.

How does the front port work?

It is a vertical slot beside the woofer, the full height of the cavity, 1.25 inches wide and 18.1 square inches. It runs 5.25 inches to the back wall and turns once along it for 8.20 inches; the fold costs about 1.5 Hz and the port is cut for it. The channel runs at 22.4 metres per second at 600 W, 54 percent of its turbulence limit, and the mouth edges carry a 1/2 inch roundover so the air leaves the face at 11.6 metres per second against the 17 metres per second threshold where a slot starts to chuff.

What does the price cover, and how does it ship?

48 lb, 32.00" W x 16.00" H x 10.25" D external. Every Professional cabinet is priced the same way, by its size: this one is 3.04 cubic feet outside. Delivery to the 48 states is inside the price; it ships as a 48 lb parcel and checkout adds nothing. Do not add polyfill; it ships dry on purpose.

Is the XS-W124ES included?

No. This is an enclosure only, cut for the Sony XS-W124ES specifically: the 11.125 inch cutout, the 5.882 inch mounting depth allowance and the 1.41 cubic foot alignment all come from Sony's published parameters. It fits both coil versions; the alignment published here is the SVC. Bring your own driver.
