This enclosure holds 1.10 cu ft net . In it the Image Dynamics IDMAX12 V4 D2 runs a system Qtc of 1.15 with half power at 35.3 Hz, and the cone reaches its 19.0 mm travel limit at 863 W, above the driver’s 500 W thermal rating, so heat stops you before travel does. A 25 Hz subsonic filter adds little here: 893 W against 863 W, 3 percent. The box already resonates at 47 Hz, so its own rolloff has removed most of what the filter would have stopped.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 19.0 mm, and in this alignment a subsonic filter barely moves it.

Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 19.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 863 W, reached first at 37 Hz. It sits above the 500 W the driver can take thermally, so the voice coil gives up before the suspension does. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct, and they sit almost on top of the solid ones: 893 W against 863 W. At 47 Hz the filter sits well below resonance, where the sealed alignment has already rolled the cone off at 12 dB/oct, so there is little wasted travel left for it to recover. Set it anyway to keep road rumble out of the cone, but do not size the amplifier around it.

Installer's take

I built this one the same way as the ten: Image Dynamics call for a sealed box on the IDMAX12, and a Qtc of 1.15 is what a small, controlled sealed box gives it.

Their own manual runs from a Compact box at 44 Hz down to an Audiophile box at 37 Hz for this driver, and this cabinet's gross airspace lands close to the middle Universal figure once the driver's own displacement is counted.

Wire the D2 coil in series for a nominal 4 ohms, or parallel for 1 ohm only on an amplifier rated for that load.

It ships with polyfill inside, the way every sealed box in this line does. Set your high-pass filter between 20 and 25 Hz.

Why is this driver in a sealed enclosure?

A Qtc of 1.15 is a step tighter than the IDMAX10's own alignment: still a controlled, punchy sealed box rather than a deep-reaching one. Image Dynamics' own manual lists three sealed volumes for the IDMAX12, a Compact box at 44 Hz, a Universal box at 40 Hz, and an Audiophile box at 37 Hz, all gross including the driver's displacement. This cabinet's 1.10 cubic feet net works out to about one and a quarter cubic feet gross, close to their Universal figure. F3 on this box comes out to 35.3 Hz.

What makes this Professional rather than Performance Optimized?

The box. A Performance Optimized cabinet is cut to fit a trunk shape on a 1.5 inch double baffle; this one is a full-size front-firing box on a 2.25 inch triple baffle with the woofer flush-mounted in the outer layer, Image Dynamics logo acrylic. It carries a 2 year warranty against 1.

Threaded inserts or a kit?

Threaded inserts pressed into the baffle on the published 11.614 inch bolt circle, stainless machine screws included. The inserts are in the baffle when it arrives; the machine screws are in the terminal cup bag.

Do I need a subsonic filter?

Not for this sealed alignment; a 20 to 25 Hz high-pass only protects the driver from content below the cabinet's own roll-off.

Would a ported version be better for me?

It depends what you want from it. A ported box gives up nothing above its tuning frequency and adds output below it, at the cost of a subsonic filter and a fixed vent length. This alignment is sealed at Qtc 1.15, F3 35.3 Hz, 1.100 cu ft net: flatter group delay and a gentler rolloff, with less output at the very bottom of the band.
