This enclosure holds 1.88 cu ft net . In it the JL Audio 13W7AE-D1.5 runs a system Qtc of 0.77 with half power at 37.4 Hz, and the cone reaches its 32.0 mm travel limit at 2042 W, above the driver’s 1500 W thermal rating, so heat stops you before travel does. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 2823 W — +781 W, or 38 percent more power for the same 32.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 49.4
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 dual 1.5 ohm 49.4
dual 1.5 ohm · EBP 49.4
EBP under 50 means a motor that wants a sealed load. The 13W7AE-D1.5 sits at 49.4, inside that band, which is why this is a sealed build rather than a ported one.

02What the box does to it

1.88 cu ft against a 104.3 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 1.96  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 40 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.77
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
dual 1.5 ohm · Qtc 0.77, Fc 40 Hz, F3 37.4 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 23.5 Hz free-air to 40 Hz and half power lands at 37.4 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. Figures are JL Audio’s published 13W7AE-D1.5 parameters, and they hold together: Qes and Qms reproduce the printed Qts, and the moving mass and compliance reproduce the 23.5 Hz resonance and 104.3 liter Vas. 1.875 cubic feet is JL’s own recommended sealed volume, which lands at Qtc 0.77 on these figures. The dual wedge holds the same per chamber, so these numbers describe it too.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 32.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 2042 W unfiltered  →  2823 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 8 16 24 32 40 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 32.0 mm 2042 W reaches Xmax here
dual 1.5 ohm · 2042 W, no filterdual 1.5 ohm · 2823 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 32.0 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 32.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 2042 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits above the 1500 W the driver can take thermally, so the voice coil gives up before the suspension does. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 2823 W before hitting the same 32.0 mm. That is 38 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

From the shop floor

Installer's take

Built to JL's own sealed box, 1.875 cubic feet, Qtc 0.771. Butterworth on these numbers wants 2.47; JL's figure is the practical one and it is punchy, not boomy.

The 10.5 inch deep motor sets the top of the wedge at 11.75 and clears the raked back with 0.75 to spare. It is 17.57 deep at the base on a 16 inch face; measure the trunk floor first.

Cut is 11.90 (302 mm), JL's own mounting hole, and the inserts are pressed on JL's 12.70 bolt circle. It is sealed, so leave the polyfill as it is and run it at 1500 watts or under.

Questions

Does this fit the JL Audio 13W7AE-D1.5, and will any other 13.5 inch fit?

The 13W7AE-D1.5, yes. The baffle is cut to 11.90 in (302 mm), JL's published mounting hole, under the 14 in (356 mm) frame. The 10.5 inch deep motor clears the raked rear panel with 0.75 inch to spare, and JL sells the 13W7AE in one version, dual 1.5 ohm coils, so there is no variant to choose.

Any other 13.5 inch, no. The airspace is built around the 13W7AE's 0.448 Qts and 104.3 liters of Vas; a different woofer that happened to drop into the hole would not see the alignment printed on this page.

Why 1.875 cubic feet, and what alignment does it target?

It is JL's own recommended sealed volume for the 13W7AE. On JL's published Fs 23.5 Hz, Qts 0.448 and Vas 104.3 liters it gives Qtc 0.771, system resonance 40.5 Hz and half power 37.4 Hz, the figures JL prints for that box.

Qtc 0.77 is a little above maximally flat: a small lift near resonance and a firm, punchy midbass. The flat box on the same figures would be 2.47 cubic feet, a bigger cabinet for a small gain in extension.

What amplifier power should I run, and how should I wire it?

JL rates the 13W7AE-D1.5 at 1500 watts RMS, so target 1050 to 1500 watts RMS at the final load.

The 13W7AE-D1.5 has two 1.5 ohm voice coils. In series they present 3 ohms; in parallel, 0.75 ohm. Use 0.75 ohm only on an amplifier built for it; for most, series at 3 ohms is the right load. Confirm your amplifier's minimum stable impedance first.

Why the wedge angle, and why rear-firing into the trunk?

The seat-side face carries a 20 degree rake that matches the lean of a factory rear seat back, so the cabinet sits flush against it and the cargo space in front stays usable. The baffle is the vertical trunk-lid-side face, so the driver fires rearward into the trunk cavity.

The trunk acts as an acoustic extension for the sealed box, and the cabin adds real output below 50 Hz, so in-vehicle response runs deeper than the anechoic 37.4 Hz on this page.

Why is the front baffle double-layered?

The baffle is two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, 1.5 inches through. A single 3/4 inch panel flexes under what a long-throw 13.5 inch with 32 mm of excursion puts on it at 1500 watts, which smears output and works the driver loose over time; the second layer stiffens the face and gives the threaded inserts twice the material to bite.

The outer layer is machined as a flush recess to JL's 14 inch frame, so the driver bolts to the inner layer and sits flush with the gloss black acrylic insert.

What is the expected low-frequency extension?

Anechoic F3 is 37.4 Hz with system resonance at 40.5 Hz. Above Qtc 0.707 F3 sits below fc, so the response carries a small lift near resonance before it rolls off.

Those figures exclude cabin gain. In a car the cabin's transfer function adds real output below 50 Hz, so in-vehicle response runs deeper than the numbers above.

Do I need to add polyfill or damping?

No. Polyfill is already installed as a light wall lining to control internal reflections, and the quantity is chosen so it does not change the acoustic volume.

Do not add more. Packing a sealed box with fill makes it behave as though it were larger, which walks the alignment away from the 1.875 cubic feet this cabinet was built to.

Is the driver included, and are the threaded inserts installed?

No driver. This is an enclosure only. You receive the cabinet finished in plush black carpet with the gloss black acrylic baffle insert, one side-mounted pre-wired terminal cup, the polyfill lining already in place, and stainless machine screws.

The threaded inserts are already pressed: JL publishes a 12.70 inch bolt circle for the 13W7AE, so we drill to it at the shop. The JL Audio 13W7AE-D1.5 is purchased separately, and the cabinet is cut direct fit to it, not a general purpose 13.5 inch box.
