Wiring OptionsThis cabinet is for the Spike SPK-8 SPK-8S4 (single 4 ohm); a matched pair should share a coil. A pair of single 4 ohm drivers lands on 2 ohms in parallel or 8 ohms in series. Anything under 1 ohm, and many amplifiers at 1 ohm, is outside what the amplifier is built for, so series wiring is the safe default.

This enclosure holds 0.50 cu ft net per chamber. In it the AudioControl SPK-8 runs a system Qtc of 0.85 with half power at 58.6 Hz, and the cone reaches its 8.5 mm travel limit at 241 W, below the driver’s 350 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. A 25 Hz subsonic filter adds little here: 246 W against 241 W, 2 percent. The box already resonates at 68 Hz, so its own rolloff has removed most of what the filter would have stopped.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 69.1
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 SPK-8S4 69.1
SPK-8S4 · EBP 69.1
At 69.1 the SPK-8 sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

02What the box does to it

0.50 cu ft against a 3.9 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 0.28  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 68 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.85
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
SPK-8S4 · Qtc 0.85, Fc 68 Hz, F3 58.6 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 60.4 Hz free-air to 68 Hz and half power lands at 58.6 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. Parameters are AudioControl’s own user manual for each coil plotted. Only the coils this listing carries are plotted; the other version falls outside a well-behaved sealed alignment in this cabinet.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 8.5 mm, and in this alignment a subsonic filter barely moves it.

PXmax = 241 W unfiltered  →  246 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 8.5 mm 241 W reaches Xmax here
SPK-8S4 · 241 W, no filterSPK-8S4 · 246 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 8.5 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 8.5 mm. Unfiltered that is 241 W, reached first at 38 Hz. It sits under the 350 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct, and they sit almost on top of the solid ones: 246 W against 241 W. At 68 Hz the filter sits well below resonance, where the sealed alignment has already rolled the cone off at 12 dB/oct, so there is little wasted travel left for it to recover. Set it anyway to keep road rumble out of the cone, but do not size the amplifier around it.

Installer's take

0.50 cubic feet per chamber: Qtc 0.852 on the SPK-8S4 (single 4 ohm), F3 58.6 Hz.

Only the SPK-8S4 (single 4 ohm) coil is listed. In this airspace the SPK-8S2 (single 2 ohm) goes too dry to recommend sealed; it belongs in a ported box.

Measure the installed height, not the cabinet height: 7.51 tall on its own, 9.26 with the standoffs on the 30 by 15 footprint.

AudioControl measures the 2 ohm and 4 ohm SPK-8 as separate drivers and they do not match, so every coil is aligned on its own figures. Their numbers hold together on every check I run.

No bolt circle is published, so the insert kit ships in the box: mark, drill and press at install. Sealed, so leave the polyfill as it is and run it at 350 watts or under per driver.

Questions

Does this fit the AudioControl Spike SPK-8, and will any other 8 inch fit?

The Spike SPK-8, yes, in the SPK-8S4 (single 4 ohm) version. The baffle is cut to 7.250 in for AudioControl's 8.425 in frame. The 4.29 inch motor clears the cabinet with 2.47 inch to spare. Run two of the same coil so the chambers match. This cabinet is listed for the SPK-8S4 (single 4 ohm) only. AudioControl's SPK-8S2 (single 2 ohm) version reads Qtc 0.56 in the same airspace, too damped to sound right sealed, so it is not offered in this enclosure.

Any other 8, no. The airspace is engineered around the Spike SPK-8's own Qts and Vas, and a different woofer that happened to drop into the hole would not see the alignment printed on this page.

Why 0.50 cubic feet per chamber, and what alignment does it target?

0.50 cubic feet net per chamber on AudioControl's published figures: the SPK-8S4 (single 4 ohm) reads Qtc 0.852 with resonance at 68.2 Hz and half power at 58.6 Hz. That is AudioControl's own recommended sealed size for this driver, 0.5 cubic feet, between their 0.25 minimum and 0.75 maximum. That is well above maximally flat: a clear lift near resonance and extra midbass, the way AudioControl voices it in this size.

Cabinet gain in a vehicle lifts the bottom end further, so in the car this reads deeper than the anechoic figures.

What amplifier power should I run, and how should I wire it?

AudioControl rates the Spike SPK-8 at 350 watts RMS per driver, so target 244 to 350 watts RMS per driver at the final load.

This cabinet is for the Spike SPK-8 SPK-8S4 (single 4 ohm); a matched pair should share a coil. A pair of single 4 ohm drivers lands on 2 ohms in parallel or 8 ohms in series. Anything under 1 ohm, and many amplifiers at 1 ohm, is outside what the amplifier is built for, so series wiring is the safe default. Confirm your amplifier's minimum stable impedance first.

How tall is this once the standoffs are on?

The cabinet is 7.51 inches tall measured in the down fire position, and that figure excludes the standoffs. The standoffs hold 1.75 inches under the baffle, so plan your space around a finished stack of roughly 9.26 inches.

The footprint is the standard Performance Optimized down fire platform, 30.00 inches wide by 15.00 deep. Height is the only dimension solved to the driver.

Why two separate chambers instead of one shared volume?

Two drivers sharing one sealed volume load each other: each driver's compression stroke becomes the pressure the other works against, which blurs the alignment either would have alone. A bonded full-height 3/4 inch divider gives each driver its own 0.50 cubic feet and its own polyfill.

It also means a failure in one driver does not unload the other, and the alignment on this page is the alignment in each chamber, not an average across a shared box.

What is the expected low-frequency extension?

Anechoic F3 is 58.6 Hz per chamber. Above Qtc 0.707 F3 sits below fc, so the response carries a small lift near resonance before it rolls off.

Those figures exclude cabin gain. In a car the cabin's transfer function adds real output below 50 Hz, so in-vehicle response runs deeper than the numbers above.

Do I need to add polyfill or damping?

No. Polyfill is already installed in both chambers as a light wall lining to control internal reflections, and the quantity is chosen so it does not change the acoustic volume.

Do not add more. Packing a sealed box with fill makes it behave as though it were larger, which walks the alignment away from the 0.50 cubic feet per chamber this cabinet was built to.

Is the driver included, and are the threaded inserts installed?

No driver. This is an enclosure only. You receive the cabinet finished in plush black carpet, one side-mounted pre-wired terminal cup to both positions, the polyfill lining already in place, the standoffs, and a threaded insert kit with stainless machine screws.

The inserts are not pre-installed: AudioControl publishes no bolt circle for the SPK-8, so set the driver in its recess, mark its holes, drill and press the inserts. The pair of AudioControl Spike SPK-8 is purchased separately, and the cabinet is cut direct fit to it, not a general purpose 8 inch box.
